  • GOVERNMENT INFORMATION AND URBAN STUDIES AND PLANNING PROGRAM LIBRARIAN

Salary and level of appointment commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on University of California pay scales.

This position is currently part of the Social Sciences & Humanities Library.  The UCSD Libraries are undertaking an organizational restructuring which will have an impact on where this position resides in the organization in the future.  Like all positions in the Libraries, we anticipate that this one will be reviewed and reshaped over time to fit the needs of the new structure as we develop it and will be placed within the new structure as appropriate.  

Responsibilities of the Position:

Provides leadership for the planning of services and collections designed to foster awareness and use of U.S. government information. Serves as the UCSD liaison to the Depository Library Council and participates in the discussion of policy. Leads the Library in the discussion of policies and issues related to government information in the digital age. Responsible for collection development for Urban Studies and Planning Program. Works closely with librarians in related disciplines. Provides in-depth reference service and consultations for all government information with an emphasis on U.S. federal government information sources. Serves as the library liaison to the Urban Studies and Planning Program. Provides general reference assistance virtually and at a combined Social Sciences and Humanities Research Desk. Participates in library user outreach and instructional programs and in library staff training with special emphasis on promoting government information in a digital environment. Provides advice to the Libraries’ Acquisitions and Metadata Services departments on policy issues related to the processing of government documents in all formats.

Required Qualifications:

  • Professional degree from a library school or other appropriate degree
  • Minimum of two years of experience with government or social sciences information
  • Awareness of issues related to maintaining, preserving, and weeding government information
  • Demonstrated commitment to public service
  • Demonstrated superior oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated potential to excel as a team member in a dynamic, technology-intensive and challenging academic library environment

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with statistical information resources and numeric data
  • Experience in library instruction or staff training
  • Experience working with social science data collections and GIS applications
  • Undergraduate degree in political science, economics, or other social science discipline
  • Knowledge of the U.S. depository guidelines and practices
