The Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, the world’s premier oceanographic institution, has been a leader and innovator in oceanography and marine technology since its inception more than 100 years ago. Throughout the twentieth century and continuing today, Scripps has played a key role in defining the science of oceanography. Supporting its pathbreaking research on global climate change, earthquake science, and marine sciences, the Scripps Library is the largest oceanography library in the world, offering unparalleled resources in marine and earth sciences. The Scripps Library has a collection of more than 227,000 volumes and more than 700 print periodicals emphasizing oceanography, marine biology, marine geology, marine technology, geophysics, and climate science, with extensive resources in ecology, zoology, fisheries, and seismology. The Scripps Institution of Oceanography Archives, which include official Scripps records, photography, personal papers, audio and film, are an important resource, documenting the history of oceanography and climate science as well as the history of Scripps itself.
