Late Fines

Materials are due at the designated time. Late fees begin at $10.00/hour and increase at a rate of $10.00 for each additional hour.  Addtional information on fines and fees is available at http://libraries.ucsd.edu/services/borrowing/fines-and-fees.html.

How Do I Report a Problem With Reserves?

Please send an email to Reserves_Committee@ad.ucsd.edu

What are Reserves?

"Reserves" or "Course reserves" are course-related materials/information that your professors make available, either electronically or physically, through the UCSD Libraries. Items that your professors may have "on reserve" for a class include: images, audio files, journal articles, videos, book chapters, practice exams etc.

What are Electronic Reserves?

Electronic Reserves (E-Reserves) allow faculty to post course-related materials on the web, and allow students to access them 24-hours a day. At no cost to faculty or students, textual materials such as journal articles that are reading for courses can be displayed on the Libraries' e-reserves Web site at http://reserves.ucsd.edu. All campus libraries offer this convenient service.

What can be put on Electronic Reserves at the Libraries?

Any articles and text documents that are in compliance with the Libraries' copyright restrictions can be digitized and put on Electronic Reserves. Resources that already exist in digital formats (articles from electronic journals, electronic books, unpublished materials on the web) can also be easily linked into the Electronic Reserves system.

What about non-textual course materials?

The Arts Library offers several digital course media services. Digital Audio Reserves (DAR) features digital music files, digital image reserves are available to UCSD faculty through the ARTstor Digital Library, and Digital Media Reserves (DMR), features selected digital videos. Additional video reserves and viewing facilities are available at Film and Video Reserves.

IP Address Restriction and Course Reserves

The Libraries' Electronic Reserves services are restricted to UCSD IP addresses. This means that they can only be accessed from computers on the UCSD network, campus affiliates using the UCSD proxy server or Virtual Private Network (VPN).

How do Electronic Reserves relate to class web pages?

Many faculty already post electronic course materials on class web pages (many of these pages are linked from ACS's course web site database). The Libraries' Electronic Reserves program provides services that support existing web pages, or allow faculty to quickly establish and maintain a new course web site with links to reserve materials. Existing course web sites can link to files on the Libraries' Electronic Reserves server, and vice versa. The Libraries' Electronic Reserves system supports several different options for faculty who want to digitize and post course reserve documents. The Libraries' Electronic Reserves system also offers options for restricting access to files as appropriate to meet the needs of the faculty and their students. Users of the Electronic Reserves service will be asked to accept a standard statement of their intent to use the material only for "private study, scholarship, or research," in order to comply with U.S. copyright law.

How do Electronic Reserves relate to other campus services, like the Bookstore?

The Libraries are pleased to be part of the Instructional Materials Services and Plans (IMSP) Group, an association of campus departments that supply UCSD faculty with materials and services needed for instruction. Course information can also be found at: http://courses.ucsd.edu.

How can I find out more?

The UCSD Libraries Reserves Committee plans and coordinates the implementation of the Libraries' Electronic Reserves program. To contact the Committee, please send an email to Reserves_Committee@ad.ucsd.edu
