Checking Out & Renewing Items

Checking Out Library Materials

UC San Diego library materials can be checked out at the circulation desk at each UC San Diego library or by using Self-Checkout (self-service borrowing) that is available next to the circulation desks at the Geisel and Biomedical Libraries. A valid UC San Diego photo identification card or a UC San Diego Libraries borrowing card with a photo ID is required for borrowing privileges.

Renew Items

Most library material (excluding course reserves) may be renewed online, over the phone, or in-person.

Online: Visit My Library Account to renew most items.

In-Person: Please visit any UC San Diego Libraries circulation desk to renew your item.

By Phone: Visit Contact Us to view a list of the phone numbers for the UC San Diego Libraries circulation desks.

Borrowing Limits

UC San Diego faculty can have up to 500 items checked out simultaneously.  UC San Diego staff and students can have up to 200 items checked out. Other library patrons can have up to 25 items checked out. All library card holders may have at total of 20 Circuit items on their account, which includes checked out, requested and returned Circuit items.

Loan Periods

Loan periods vary by item and by library card holder status.

Please ask at a library circulation desk for the loan period of your item.

Recalls and Holds

Recalls: All items checked out are subject to recall. A library recall will alter the due date to a shorter loan period when another UC patron needs that item. Once the item is returned it will be placed on the hold shelf designated for picked up by the waiting user. Only UC faculty, staff and students can recall any item currently checked out by using the "Request" feature in Roger.

Holds: A hold allows most checked out items to be held at the UC San Diego Library circulation desk of your choice, but does not alter the due date. Please note some material types are not eligible for holds. Contact any library circulation desk and a library staff member can assist you with placing the hold. UC faculty, staff and students may also hold any item currently checked out by using the "Request" feature in Roger.

Paging: Available materials may be paged for pick-up using the “Request” feature in Roger. Items shelved at the main campus libraries may only be paged to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Library, otherwise they must be checked out directly from their owning branch. Scripps Institution of Oceanography Library items may only be paged to campus branches. Material located at the Annex may be paged for pick-up at any of the UC San Diego libraries. Staff at any library circulation desk may also assist you in paging your items.

Missing Items

If you cannot find an item on the shelf, please report it missing at the owning library’s circulation desk. Library staff will change its status to MISSING, and you may then request it from Circuit or Interlibrary Loan.

Searches

The UC San Diego libraries provide a Search service for any items listed as "AVAILABLE" in ROGER, but which appear to be missing from the shelves. Library staff may verify the status and shelving location of the item and may initiate a search request if the item cannot be located. Please ask for help at the owning library's circulation desk as each UC San Diego library has its own policy about Searches.

Notices

The UC San Diego Libraries send all notices via email. UC San Diego faculty, staff and student notices will be sent to an official UC San Diego email address. If you prefer that a different email address be used for your campus communications, then you need to redirect your campus email.

Courtesy Library Notices may include:

  • Courtesy notice: Your items will be due soon; renew as soon as possible.
  • Overdue notice: Your items are overdue.
  • Hold notice: Your item is ready for pickup.
  • Recall notice: The due date has been shortened and item must be returned for another patron.
  • Billing notice: Library fines have been applied to your library account.

Please note the Libraries are not responsible for notices not received. Failure to respond to notices will result in suspension of library privileges, library fines, and possible replacement bills. If you do not receive your notices, please contact a library circulation desk.
