Approximately 125 guests helped kick off the campus' 50th anniversary year by joining us for our seventh annual Dinner in the Library on September 16 in the newly-renovated Arts Library in the Geisel Library building. Guests feasted on Chicken Wellington, Bananas Foster, and other tasty dishes, followed by a talk by Hugh M. Davies, Ph.D., the David C. Copley Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. The program also included the presentation of the inaugural Geisel Citation for Library Philanthropy.
Brian Schottlaender, The Audrey Geisel University Librarian, presented Arthur Brody with the first Geisel Citation for Library Philanthropy to acknowledge his leadership and financial contributions to the Libraries and also his long history of collaborating with libraries and librarians.
Hugh Davies followed with a lively talk that highlighted his perspectives on "town and gown," MCASD's strong relationship with the Libraries and UCSD, and his own memories of growing up as the son of a Princeton professor. In recognition of the partnership between MCASD and the Libraries, Brian Schottlaender plated a book, Francis Bacon: New Studies, Centenary Essays, edited by Martin Harrison (2009), in his honor.
Guests each received a copy of local author Dirk Sutro's The Campus Guide: The University of California, San Diego, courtesy of Boone Helmann, UCSD's campus architect, as a keepsake. A variety of door-prizes-ranging from bomber jacket messenger bags to autographed baseballs- were provided by Levenger and the San Diego Padres organization.
We would like to thank each of our guests and also give special thanks to this year's sponsors:

The UC San Diego Libraries launched a new mobile Web site this fall, to meet the needs of the growing number of mobile device users on and off campus. The site, which can be accessed at: http://libraries.ucsd.edu/m, provides quick mobile access to essential library information, including UC and UCSD catalogs, research tools, contacts, maps, and hours. Users can also text, chat, or call library staff right from their phone using the Ask a Librarian service. With the catalogs, users can search for, find, and reserve library items.
The Libraries are among the first UC Libraries – and only a small percentage of academic libraries in the U.S. – to launch a platform for users of mobile devices. The Libraries plan to add more services and tools to its mobile platform over the next several months.
