Libraries and Collections at UC San Diego

From the earliest days, with the Library residing in the first new building on campus at Galbraith Hall, the Library system has been committed to developing services and collections in support of the research, study and instructional needs of the faculty, students and staff of the university. In order to accomplish the Library's goals, specialized libraries and collections have been built to serve the needs of researchers in specific disciplines.

Biomedical & Medical Center Libraries

The Biomedical Library is located on the UCSD main campus and supports the research, teaching and patient care programs of the UCSD School of Medicine, the UCSD Medical Center, and the Department of Biology. Its collection of approximately 200,000 bound volumes and approximately 2,550 current journal subscriptions covers the fields of medicine and biology.

The Medical Center Library, a branch of the Biomedical Library, is located at the UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. Its clinically oriented book and journal collections support the activities of health care providers located at the Medical Center and include approximately 27,000 bound volumes and 690 current journal subscriptions.

CLICS: Center for Library & Instructional Computing Services

CLICS, located in Galbraith Hall on Revelle Plaza, provides a unique, comfortable spot for students from all colleges to do their work, study, and relax. There are 172 computers available for the Web, email, word processing, and other uses, plus group study rooms. Library instructors are available to come into your class, or sit down one-on-one, to give research tips and help you with your projects. Take a break from the schoolwork by browsing CLICS's recreational magazines and books, or visit the campus's newest coffee and snack cart, right outside the doors.

Geisel Library Building

The Geisel Library Building was named on December 1, 1995 in honor of Audrey and Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) for the generous contributions they have made to the Libraries and their devotion to improving literacy. It houses the following libraries and collections:

International Relations and Pacific Studies Library

The International Relations and Pacific Studies Library, located on Thurgood Marshall College campus, aligns itself with the interests of the Graduate School of International Relations/Pacific Studies (IR/PS). In accord with the School's mission, the Library seeks to distinguish itself as a center of comprehensive information-gathering with emphasis on contemporary political economies and societies of the Pacific region.

Scripps Institution of Oceanography Library

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography Library is housed in the Carl Eckart Building on the Scripps campus. Carl Eckart directed the Institution in the late 1940's. The library is considered by many to be the finest oceanographic library in the world because it contains an enormous collection of marine-related literature and reference materials. It also contains the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Archives which houses the papers of many of the leading oceanographers of the past as well as important source documents.
