Position Title:  Director, Academic Liaison Services (Librarian series)

The UC San Diego Libraries are committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body.

Program Description

The Academic Liaison Services program is responsible for building and sustaining strong communication channels between the Libraries and campus academic units, and providing academic liaison and other services in support of UC San Diego’s teaching and research activities.  Program activities include: 

  • Building and sustaining strong and consistent communication channels between the library and academic departments using a variety of activities both general and specific
  • Developing and supporting a framework for collaborative activities between the library and the faculty
  • Developing , providing, and promoting a suite of library and liaison services which directly support faculty teaching and research activities
  • Integrating library resources and services within campus research  programs
  • Identifying strategies for learning about and understanding the information needs of campus units
  • Identifying ways to effectively share information about library services and resources with campus constituents
  • Identifying ways to effectively communicate academic research and teaching needs and priorities  within the library, so that library policies, collections, and services are responsive to the interests and needs of the academic community

Responsibilities of the Position

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Academic Services, the Director, Academic Liaison Services, provides vision, leadership, and management, and strategic planning for all programmatic, administrative, and operational activities for the UCSD Libraries’ Academic Liaison Services program.  This position is part of the Library’s Program Directors Group that works in close concert with senior management.

  1. In consultation with other library staff and the AUL, Academic Services, provide leadership in the development and implementation of a new service program; initial emphasis will be on planning; research; identifying program objectives and scope; formulation of program goals, policies, and processes; identifying staffing, operational, and resource needs; and implementation
  2. Identify and implement best practices and innovative approaches for providing liaison services
  3. Develop competencies and training for staff serving as academic liaisons
  4. Develop strategies for  identifying and supporting the teaching and research needs of faculty and other instructors
  5. Serve as a supervisor of academic and/or staff employees including hiring, evaluating, training, and developing direct and indirect reports
  6. Ensure cross-program coordination and management of staff involved in the implementation and delivery of program services, in particular between this program and Information Resources Development & Management, Learning Services, Reference & Research Advisory Services, and Research Data Curation Services programs
  7. Perform staffing, budget and resource analysis
  8. Evolve and modify program scope, services, procedures, and practices consistent with the goals and mission of the Libraries and in response to program evaluation and assessment, changes in user needs, and changes in available resources
  9. Collaborate with other Libraries programs to fulfill the program’s mission and carry out  program activities, in particular the Digital User Services, Information Resources Development & Management, Learning Services, and Reference & Research Advisory Services programs
  10. Collaborate with other Libraries programs to help them fulfill their program missions and carry out their program activities

Required Qualifications

  1. Professional degree from a library school or other appropriate degree or equivalent experience in one or more fields related to library services
  2. Ability to work and provide effective leadership in a diverse and changing environment
  3. Ability to operate effectively with a high level of independence and display a high degree of initiative in the delivery and implementation of strategies and priorities
  4. Superior communication and interpersonal skills; ability to present and share ideas clearly and effectively

The Digital User Services Program is responsible for strategically setting the direction for, coordinating the development of, and managing a digital environment that enables and facilitates user access to information and services in support of the university’s teaching and research activities.  Program activities include:
