A Series Featuring Scripps Institution of Oceanography Climate Scientists

5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Geisel Library, Seuss Room

A salute to the renowned climate scientists at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography illuminating different aspects of climate change challenges—the case for a more unified approach that includes religious leaders and social scientists, the tools of deception, and the communications challenges faced by scientists.

Professor Veerabhadran Ramanathan
Bending the Curve of Climate Change: Why Do We Need an Alliance Between Science, Religion & Policy?
RSVP at climate-change-at-the-crossroads-april6.eventbrite.com
Scripps distinguished climate and atmospheric scientist Veerabhadran Ramanathan is known for his pioneering research on climate change and climate change mitigation, including his discovery that man-made gases and pollutants other than CO2 contribute to global warming and that taking action on them can result in a quick reduction in greenhouse gases. The recipient of the Champions of the Earth Award, the United Nation’s highest environmental honor, Ramanathan is a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, and played a key role in advising Pope Francis and other religious leaders on climate change issues. He is also playing a leadership role in the University of California’s Carbon Neutrality Initiative, in which the UC system has pledged to nearly eliminate its contribution to global warming.

Professor Lynn Russell & Ellie Farahani
“Merchants of Doubt” and its Legacy for Climate Science and Policy
RSVP at climate-change-at-the-crossroads-april21.eventbrite.com
Lynn Russell, a professor of atmospheric chemistry at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, conducts research on aerosol particle chemistry to increase our understanding of the role atmospheric aerosols play in Earth’s climate. Russell’s colleague Ellie Farahani, executive director of the Climate Science and Policy Master of Advanced Studies program at Scripps, manages international science-policy initiatives and previously conducted field campaigns measuring greenhouse gas concentrations for more than a decade. Russell and Farahani will present the documentary film, Merchants of Doubt, based on the book written by former UC San Diego science historian Naomi Oreskes, who now teaches at Harvard. Russell uses the film in her teaching, which demonstrates how climate change deniers and special interests have attempted to influence the science-policy landscape.

Professor Emeritus Richard Somerville
Climate Change: Strong Science, Forceful Actions, Positive Outcomes
RSVP at climate-change-at-the-crossroads-april28.eventbrite.com
Climate scientist Richard Somerville has made fundamental contributions to our understanding of the key physical processes that fuel climate change. Over the last several years, he has championed the importance of clear and understandable communication of the science of climate change, and last year was awarded the American Geophysical Union’s Climate Communication Prize, in recognition of his efforts. The author or co-author of more than 200 scientific publications, Somerville’s award-winning book, The Forgiving Air: Understanding Environmental Change, was recently reissued by the American Meteorological Society.

All events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Mariah Fellows at mfellows@ucsd.edu.
