Geisel’s 8th Floor Makeover Will Benefit Student Experience

Posted On: September 28, 2017

Welcome back Tritons! While you were off campus enjoying your summer, we’ve been busy planning for renovations happening in Geisel Library this fall.

Shovels are ready and work is underway! In preparation for construction, Geisel Library’s 8th floor closed on Sept. 22 and will remain closed until further notice. We’re expecting the project to wrap up sometime in Winter Quarter 2018. Very exciting!

Here’s a summary of the updates and what you can expect if you visit the Geisel Library over the Fall Quarter.

1. It’s all about that space …
We’re creating an updated, modern space for individual study on Geisel’s 8th floor. Stylish, comfortable, and practical furniture will be incorporated into our forward-thinking design. We love it! Hope you love it, too.

2. Restroom will get some much-needed TLC
We’re adding ADA-accessible and gender-neutral restrooms on each floor throughout Geisel’s tower. But don’t panic yet, throughout the renovation period, floors 4 – 7 will remain open, and there will be access to restrooms on each floor at all times (Phew!) We anticipate the restroom renovations to continue through Winter Quarter.

3. Find a peaceful spot to study on the 7th floor
Geisel’s 7th floor will serve as the new, temporary, silent study floor during the closure of the 8th floor, and the Biomedical Library Building has been declared a Quiet Building indefinitely.

4. Construction hours
Generally, construction will occur in one shift, from 6:00am to 3:00pm. Exceptions may occur and Library staff will notify users in advance when possible.

5. Where did Geisel’s 8th floor materials go?
The collection of oversized materials that was on Geisel’s 8th floor has been moved to the 6th floor. The Roger catalog can be used to find the current locations of any books.

Pardon our dust while we continue to improve your Library! Follow our progress on our social media as the project moves along. For the latest updates, visit lib.ucsd.edu/construction.

Changes Are Coming! Geisel Library Renovations Slated for Fall 2017

Posted On: September 5, 2017

Temporary Closure of Geisel’s 8th Floor to Begin September 2017

The long-awaited and much-needed renovation of the interior spaces of Geisel Library is moving forward, with Geisel’s 8th floor scheduled to be closed as of Friday, September 22, 2017 in order to create an updated, modern space for individual study. Work will begin promptly and the 8th floor is expected to reopen in Winter Quarter 2018. Simultaneously, the restrooms on Geisel’s floors 4 – 7 will undergo renovation and new ADA-accessible and gender-neutral restrooms will be added to each floor.

Throughout the course of the restroom renovations, Geisel’s floors 4 – 7 will remain open, and there will be restroom access on each floor at all times. Restroom renovations on floors 4 – 7 will likely continue through Winter Quarter 2018. Generally, construction will occur in one shift, from 6:00am to 3:00pm. Exceptions may occur and Library staff will notify users in advance when possible.

With the continuing need to provide quiet study space, Geisel’s 7th floor will serve as the new, temporary, silent study floor during the closure of the 8th floor, and the Biomedical Library Building has been declared a Quiet Building indefinitely. The collection of oversized materials that was on Geisel’s 8th floor has been moved to the 6th floor. The Roger catalog can be used to find the current locations of any books.

The renovation of the 8th floor marks the next phase of the Geisel Library Revitalization Initiative (GLRI), which began in 2015 with the construction of Audrey’s Café. Responding to student, faculty, and staff feedback, the renovation sets out to transform the interior public spaces of Geisel Library by dramatically enhancing the user experience through modern, technology-rich spaces that advance research and learning.

“A” is for Audrey at Geisel Library Café, Slated to Open in Spring 2016

Posted On: February 18, 2016

The long-awaited Geisel Library café won’t open its doors until spring 2016, but, already, it’s  earned an “A.” But, this A is not the coveted grade, it’s for Audrey, specifically Audrey Geisel, the generous benefactor of the University of California, San Diego Library for whom the new café will be named.

A working draft of what the café space will look like as of February 2016.

Audrey’s is expected to be completed in mid to late spring, with a grand opening planned for the campus and community supporters in May 2016. The café, which has been under construction since last December, is located on the 2nd (main) floor in the East Wing of Geisel Library, conveniently situated on the north end of the building’s most heavily used study area, which also houses the overnight study commons.

“I’m truly touched that so many of my friends at the UC San Diego Library have decided to name this new café after me,” said Audrey Geisel. “Even before we established the Dr. Seuss Collection here at the Library many years ago, I felt that this was a very special place, and certainly worthy of my continuing support. I know that Ted (Dr. Seuss) felt the same way, so I’m very pleased to know that our support will help to provide the resources and the services—not to mention caffeine— that today’s library patrons need to stay on the cutting edge.”

The café is one of the many enhancements planned for the university’s flagship building over the next several years, thanks to a $3 million gift made by Audrey Geisel in July 2015, which is the lead gift in the Geisel Library Revitalization Initiative, a major endeavor aimed at transforming and rejuvenating the interior public spaces of the Library to meet the evolving needs of students, faculty, and other Library users in an increasingly digital environment. Thanks to a generous $3 million gift from San Diego philanthropist, literacy advocate, and longtime supporter of the UC San Diego Library, Audrey Geisel, construction will begin this December on the first of many space enhancements, technology upgrades, and new Library services that will transform and revitalize the most actively used spaces in the Library. The gift kicks off the Geisel Library Revitalization Initiative (GLRI), a major initiative to transform and revitalize the interior public spaces of Geisel Library to meet the evolving needs of students, faculty, and other Library users in the digital age.

Geisel’s gift will support the renovation of the second, main floor of Geisel Library, including a reconfigured entrance and lobby, a significant upgrade to the existing Learning Commons as well as a new Research Commons, and a new café and lounge. The café, which no doubt will be very popular with patrons, especially with students studying around the clock in the Library’s overnight study space, is expected to open its doors in Spring 2016. Renovation efforts will include new technology enhancements, as well as new furniture, carpeting and finishes. While the gift will support the revitalization of the main floor public spaces, additional funds are needed to support renovation efforts in the public spaces on the 1st and 8th floors of the building.

“Our library facilities are being used now, more than ever,” said Brian Schottlaender, the Audrey Geisel University Librarian. “But, like many libraries across the nation, the Library is being used different than it was in the past. Our hope is that Geisel’s generous gift will lead to more support, so we can upgrade other public spaces in the building in the near future. I would urge others to join Audrey in helping to fulfill this exciting initiative to transform this iconic building into a library that is well-equipped for 21st century learners. We want this amazing building to be as inspiring on the inside as it is bold on the outside.”
