DML uses SketchFab to create 360 degree photos

SketchDigital cameras are used to capture images in full stereo surround for use in virtual reality systems. These images can cover any field of view, including 360° by 180° spherical panoramas. Two photographic cylinders are created with identical dimensions, capturing the perspective as seen from each eye position. When these cylinders are mapped to a spherical surface, full stereo in all directions is achieved. This technique allows photographic imaging to create the virtual environment itself. The complete stereo image that is created by this technique can be viewed in any direction that is supported by the virtual reality system design.fab allows us to embed 360 photo viewers in browser now. All we have to do is make a sphere, apply the panorama as a texture, and move the camera inside of it. These photos comes from the CaveCam collection now hosted on the Geisel Library Digital Collections site.

This imaging technique complements existing technologies such as LiDAR or SfM providing more detailed textural information that can be used in conjunction for analysis and visualization. The advantages of this digital imaging technique for cultural heritage can be seen in its non-invasive and rapid capture of heritage sites for documentation, analysis, and immersive visualization. The technique is applied to several significant heritage sites in Luxor, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Sketchfab now allows for embed 360 photo viewers in browsers. These photos comes from the CaveCam collection now hosted on the Geisel Library Digital Collections site (CaveCam Collection, UC San Diego Library).

Workshop: Acquisition, Processing, and Analysis of Declassified CORONA Satellite Imagery

The UC San Diego Center for Cyber-Archaeology and Sustainability at the Qualcomm Institute and the UC San Diego Library are hosting a free workshop May 15 – 16, 2018 that will explore the technical aspects and research applications of declassified, Cold War-era CORONA satellite imagery. In operation from 1960-1972, the CORONA satellite program collected over 860,000 images across the entire globe, all of which are now publicly available through the USGS. These extraordinary, high-resolution images preserve a unique picture of the world as it appeared a half-century ago, and have become a critical research tool in archaeology, environmental science, geography and other disciplines. The workshop is led by Jesse Casana, Associate Professor of Anthropology at Dartmouth College. The workshop will take place in the Geisel Library.

Walk-In Expert Consultations Now Offered at the Digital Media Lab

A Hub for Innovation and Learning: 3D Technologies Offered by UC San Diego Library

Higher education institutions have reached a pivotal turning point, where a confluence of innovative and ground-breaking technologies are bringing an abundance of change to the way in which we teach and learn. From cloud computing to 3D printing and augmented reality, these technologies are altering how we live and work.

For decades, a great deal of scholarly work was limited to photos and text, causing important details about objects and places to be lost and our ability to communicate complexity to be hampered. At the heart of our most recent wave of innovative technologies is a newfound ability to quickly and easily process and visualize 3D data. The means to design and build a new object, explore a place without being there, and capture and share the world around us is now highly accessible. Geisel Library’s Digital Media Lab (DML) puts these tools in the hands of students and faculty and lends expertise and context to make the learning experience simple, fun, and personally relevant. Library Sponsors Hackathon for Virtual, Mixed, and Augmented Reality

The student-run Virtual Reality Club at the University of California San Diego is launching the university’s first-ever hackathon devoted exclusively to software programming for what they call ‘Extended Reality’ (XR) applications.

The 36-hour hackathon will run over three days from 7 p.m. on Friday, February 23 to 1 p.m. on Sunday, February 25. The event will take place in and around the VR Lab located in the basement of the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) building on the UC San Diego campus. The cutoff for registration is February 16, 2018.

“Until now, most hackathons have focused on general software programming, while making room for some hackers who wanted to develop virtual-reality applications,” said HackXR director Anish Kannan, a senior majoring in Computer Science and officer of the VR Club. “We thought it was time to devote an entire hackathon to the growing ranks of students who are developing not only virtual worlds for virtual reality (VR), but also for other points on the spectrum of virtual environments including augmented reality and mixed reality.”

HackXR is open to students from any university (with ID), but organizers are planning to cap participation at 100 entrants because of a limit on the number of XR-related systems available to support all competitors. Available hardware, space, computers, and computer peripherals will include HTC Vives, Oculus Rifts, Microsoft Hololens, Windows Mixed Reality Headsets, Samsung Gear VRs, Google Daydreams and Google Cardboards (for viewing VR programs playing on a smartphone). Mentors will also be available to help participants get mixed-reality software including ARCore and ARKit working on students’ smartphones. Read more…

Brace Yourself — 3-D Technology Helps Sea Turtle Thrive

Birch Aquarium teams up with the UC San Diego Library’s Digital Media Lab to 3-D print a brace for its Loggerhead Sea Turtle

Birch Aquarium has teamed up with the Library’s Digital Media Lab to create what is believed to be the first 3-D-printed brace for a sea turtle’s shell.

The Loggerhead Sea Turtle was rescued from a New Jersey power plant in 2013 with a large gap in the bottom right part of her shell. This gap, along with an abnormal curve of her spine and paralysis of her back flippers, is likely due to trauma experienced in the wild before she was rescued.

When she arrived at Birch Aquarium in 2014, the juvenile Loggerhead Sea Turtle weighed just 74.5 pounds. She has since thrived, gaining more than 130 pounds.

“That growth has really exacerbated her condition. Without our intervention, the sea turtle could have gastro-intestinal and urogenital systems complications,” said Jenn Nero Moffatt, senior director of animal care, science and conservation for the aquarium. “We teamed up with the Digital Media Lab at Geisel Library to create a brace that will prevent the shell from curving further downward and will promote more normal growth. It’s our goal to prevent further complications and keep her as healthy and happy as possible.”  Read more…

Enhancements to the Tech Lending Program

The Learning Spaces Program has added six “GorillaPods” to its Tech Lending Program.  These smartphone tripods have bendable, gripping legs so they can be attached to a variety of surfaces at any angle, or used as a simple tripod.  Two versions are available, to accommodate any size of smartphone.  Simply do a Roger keyword search for GorillaPod or Smartphone Tripod to check availability.

Firefly Smart Mirror – Student Startup Supported by DML

A few months back we lent our 3D printers and expertise to a group of students working on a smart mirror design. It’s just now hit Kickstarter and looks pretty cool.
