Geisel After Dark 2015

The second annual Geisel After Dark Student Success & Safety Information Fair will be held on November 4, 2015. At the event, we invite student support units and library programs to share their information with student library users. Our goal is to encourage use of Library and campus resources. In addition we wish to increase student awareness of personal safety while using the Library after dark.

This event is a valuable opportunity for the library and the participating campus support units to continue raising the awareness about the available student support services.

Digital Media Lab Opens in Geisel Library

The UC San Diego Library has opened its new Digital Media Lab (DML), which provides the space and technology tools students, faculty, and other Library users need for creating and editing media projects.DMLp2 Along with free 3D printing, the DML — located in the Geisel East Learning Commons (on the main floor) — provides video editing software, including Final Cut Pro, iMovie, and Camtasia; image manipulation programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects; and sound editing tools like Adobe Soundbooth and Garageband. The Lab also offers media-rich website creation programs such as Dreamweaver, Flash, and Filezilla, as well as basic productivity software, including MS Office, web browsers, and Adobe Acrobat Pro. Since its Open House on October 5 and 6, more that 500 students, faculty and staff have visited the space.

The new, technology-equipped lab comes on the heels of a survey conducted last year to gauge the multi-media needs of UC San Diego faculty and students, which confirmed that there is high demand for such a facility. The survey found that while more than 50% of student respondents (about 650) had been given multimedia assignments in their time at the University, half of those students felt they lacked sufficient space, equipment, and/or software to complete the assignments.

The My Ideal Library Display

Exhiibt picture 50 x 50 for the blog

If you thought that assessment projects can only be lists of questions, well…let the Library’s Learning Spaces Program (LSP) help you to think outside of the box – literally! Stop by the display on Geisel’s 1st Floor Southwest to see the results of LSP’s 2014 ‘Ideal Library’ Project. UCSD students were asked to use markers to draw and describe their ideal library on small white cardboard boxes. Actions resulting from the results of this initiative are presented on informational posters, along with the original boxes in display cases. This fun and creative assessment activity has informed LSP staff regarding the technology, furnishing, and de-stressing enhancements of interest and value to library users. We’re planning to conduct a similar activity again in the fall of 2015 to gather additional feedback from library users.
