Compendex/Knovel Search Update and the Knovel Academic Challenge (Oct 10-Nov 13)

Posted On: September 25, 2016

The Engineering (formerly Knovel) Academic Challenge is back.

Engineering Academic ChallengeFrom October 10-November 13, join students at other universities in a competition to answer real-world engineering questions using the Knovel and Compendex databases. A new set of questions will go up each week, starting with the theme “Energy for the Sustainable Future” and ending with “The Future of Transport.” There will be weekly winners as well as some grand prize winners announced at the end of the five weeks.

To participate, first register at, and when prompted select University of California as your academic institution. The first problem set will go live on Monday, October 10. You can check the leaderboard to view campus rankings.

New: Search Knovel within Compendex

You can now search Knovel within the Engineering Village (Compendex) interface. In Compendex, just check the box for Knovel before you run your search; references from Knovel will have a Knovel logologo that you can click to bring up the source in Knovel.

  • You will be directed to the book in Knovel from the reference in Compendex, but not to the chapter or page in question. You’ll need to browse or search within the book to find the page(s) you need.
  • There are a few Knovel collections we don’t license, including Composites, Software Engineering, and Nondestructive Testing & Evaluation. These haven’t been excluded from the Compendex searching, so if you are directed to a book in a nonlicensed collection, check Roger to see if we have to book in print, or with your engineering librarian (Deborah, Dave, or Teri) for further assistance.
