GPS Data into ArcGIS Explorer Desktop – you don’t need the full ArcGIS suite to do it

If you have Business Analyst (online or desktop) or Community Analyst, ESRI has released Census 2010 data and geographies into those products! Check out more details at: http://spatialnews.geocomm.com/dailynews/2011/may/24/news4.html.
Thanks to Erik Gakstetter at Geospatial Solutions for bringing this to my attention. Basically, it’s GIS displayed on a globe and it is big and it looks like it is leaps and bounds away from 3D on a screen or elsewhere.
Erik’s article is at: http://www.gpsworld.com/gis/gss-weekly/gis-a-sphere-11596?utm_source=GSS&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Geospatial-Weekly_05_03_2011&utm_content=gis-a-sphere-11596
Thanks to the folks on the Maps-L listserv for bringing this site to my attention! They’ve geocoded almost all of the Biblical places and even the bodies of water and made them available, for free, in KML format.
This should be great for lots of us who are interested in the different Landsat layers such as natural color imagery, false color imagery, ag, vegetation and the like. Thanks ESRI! More details at: http://esri.com/landsat.
Many thanks to John at SANDAG for making this data accessible! Here’s the info on it per John: Census data for San Diego are now available on the SANDAG website. Go to Census Data Online and look under “2010 Census Redistricting Data”. We have “filtered” the Census Bureau’s Redistricting Data from hundreds of fields to: total population; eight race categories; and three housing unit fields. The data are available as zipped Excel files. The census geographies are tracts and blocks. Also available are SANDAG Subregional Areas and Major Statistical Areas. This summer, the Census Bureau plans to release Demographic Data (age, sex, income). SANDAG will again “filter” the data and post selected information in our Profile Warehouse.
You can download matching shapefiles from the SANDAG GIS Downloads. Look for “2010 Census Geography” under Administrative Boundaries. The TIGER/Line shapefile data are projected from longitude-latitude to local California State Plane Coordinates. This is “raw” unadjusted TIGER shapefiles. We are in the process of adjusting some block boundaries to better fit local GIS layers (parcels, municipal boundaries, etc…). If you want or need the original TIGER shapefiles, please go to 2010 Census TIGER/Line Shapefiles Main.
Note: If you are using block-level data, please contact me. I am happy to share my experience concerning some of the strangeness (e.g. census voting districts).

Go Aztecs!
Thanks.

They make it sound easy to use the DataFerrett to get Census data in larger extracts that are customized, but do beware that it isn’t quite as easy as they may make it sound! http://dataferrett.census.gov/
But, you do need Silverlight to use it. This site uses ESRI’s Business Analyst Online with some of their tapestry data. It’s great data but the functionality is somewhat limited to viewing. Enjoy!
Here’s a post from the ESRI blog which can help you do that…http://blogs.esri.com/Dev/blogs/publicsafety/archive/2010/01/20/Accessing-OpenStreetMap-data-within-ArcGIS-to-support-the-Haiti-Earthquake-Response.aspx
Now there’s a script that you can download so that ArcGIS can make cartograms…we all love them on sites like Worldmapper, and now you can make your own!
The script is found at http://arcscripts.esri.com/details.asp?dbid=15638.
