Shu Chien Awarded National Medal of Science

President Barack Obama has named UC San Diego Bioengineering professor Shu Chien one of the 7 eminent researchers to receive the National Medal of Science, the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on scientists and engineers. Chien is the only engineer among the 7 medalists.

Shu Chien, a university professor of bioengineering and medicine and director of the UC San Diego Institute of Engineering in Medicine, is a world leader in the study of how blood flow and pressure affect blood vessels. He is one of only 11 renowned scholars who are members of all 3 U.S. national institutes — the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine. MORE

5 UC San Diego Bioengineers Named Siebel Scholars

Five UC San Diego bioengineering Ph.D. students whose research is aimed at improving human health are among the 2012 recipients of the annual Siebel Scholars awards. Selected for their outstanding academic performance and leadership, each student receives a $35,000 fellowship during the final year of their studies.

The five new Siebel Scholars from the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering are part of the Department of Bioengineering, which ranks 1st in the nation for biomedical engineering, according to the 2010 National Research Council (NRC) rankings.

Summer Webinars on Digital Preservation, Web Archiving, Data Curation

The UC3 Summer Webinar Series is a forum for the discussion of timely topics of interest to the UC community such as digital preservation, web archiving and data curation.  The purpose of this series is to raise awareness of these issues, and the resources and services available to the UC community.  The webinars will feature librarians, scientists, and technologists.

Webinars are scheduled twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays from 2-3 pm PT, but check the schedule for exceptions and additions.  ReadyTalk will be used to provide both desktop and audio access.  Please feel free to drop in to whichever portion of the session that you can use.  After each seminar, the slides, audiorecording, and notes from the session will be added to this web page.

3 New Nat’l Academy of Sciences Members from UC San Diego

The National Academy of Sciences today elected three professors from the University of California, San Diego to membership in the National Academy of Sciences, one of the highest honors bestowed on U.S. scientists and engineers.

Herbert Levine, J. Andrew McCammon and David T. Sandwell were among the 72 new members and 18 foreign associates elected to the academy today “in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.”
They join 89 current members of the UC San Diego faculty who previously had been named to membership in the academy, which was established by Congress in 1863 to serve as an official adviser to the federal government on matters of science and technology.
