Hello,
I am interested in reading Mr. Lee's book " In Search of Gold Mountain: A History of the Chinese in San Diego”, but have been unable to order it through Amazon or other book stores. I read about Mr. Lee in the Coast News when I was in San Diego, visiting my grandson in February. I was disappointed, my flight was scheduled to leave on the 7th and I was unable to extend my trip, so I was unable to attend his lecture. If you could let me know how I can obtain a copy, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Ann Eidson annk37405@aol.com

Hi Alison,

We tried to minimize the impact of the budget cuts. Prior to making the decision to reduce hours in any of the library facilities, we conducted a thorough review of traffic and usage levels at all the libraries, relative to the associated costs and staffing requirements. That review demonstrated that our use levels are lowest on the weekends and late at night. Consequently, it is during those periods—in Biomed, CLICS, Geisel, the Medical Center Library, and SIO—that we have carried out our initial reductions.

At SDSU, the students voted themselves a library use fee starting in 2002 that funds their 24/7 space. Each student pays a library use fee that supports, among other things, extended library hours and keeping one area of the library open 24 hours a day when classes are in session. The library use fee caps this fall, 2010, at $25/semester. So at SDSU, each student is now paying $25/semester to support library services like keeping parts of their library open 24/7.

There is a 24/7 study space in the Price Center East for most of the week. Their hours are:
M-Th 24 hrs
Fri 24 hrs - 2:30am
Sat 7:30am - 2:30am
Sun 8am - 24 hrs

best,

I understand that your funding has been cut. I think it would be feasible to stay open later with less of a staff to pay. Those of us who are studying here late usually only need the space rather than librarian help. Yes, someone to check out books is necessary but there are many desk attendants in other areas of the library who sit idley or do their own work whose hours could be cut in order to save money. How is it that San Diego State University can recieve cuts to their budget and still provide a 24/7 study area and UC San Diego (top research university) can only stay open until midnight? They have different hours for each distinct area of the library. This is a more fiscally responsible way of managing a poor library.
