Checking Out & Renewing Items

Checking Out Library Items

UC San Diego Library items can be checked out at the Front Desk of the Geisel or Biomedical Library Buildings by using the self-checkout machines located near the entrance in either building. A valid UC San Diego photo identification card or a UC San Diego Library privilege card with a photo ID is required for borrowing privileges.

Renewing Items

Most library items (excluding course reserves) can be renewed online, by phone, or in-person.

Online: Go to My Library Account / Renew Items to renew most items. For additional information, go to My Library Account.

By phone: Contact the Front Desk of Geisel Library at 858-534-0134 or Biomedical Library Building at 858-534-3253.

In-Person: Go to the Front Desk of the Geisel or Biomedical Library Buildings.

Items with recalls or holds, or in fine status, cannot be renewed. To renew Interlibrary Loan items, go to Renew Your Materials.

Returning Items

Library items, excluding course reserves, can be returned at the Front Desk of the Geisel or Biomedical Library Buildings by using book return bins or handing items to Library staff. Return bins are located outside Geisel Library’s front doors or outside the north and south breezeway entrances of the Biomedical Library Building. Additionally, drive-up return bins are located on Hopkins Drive, just west of Geisel Library.

Course reserves must be returned to the Front Desk from which the material was borrowed. After-hours book returns are located next to Geisel Library’s entrance. During Geisel Overnight Study Commons hours, course reserves may also be returned to the Geisel Front Desk book drop.

Although we offer extended due dates for the convenience of our users, these due dates are not guaranteed. If another UC San Diego faculty, staff, or student needs an item that is checked out, he or she may recall the item from the original borrower, which will shorten the original loan period. Recall policies are common in academic libraries where loan periods tend to be longer. These policies allow users the convenience of longer loans, minimizing the need for meticulous tracking of one’s library account, while still allowing the collection to be shared with all users when there is a higher demand for particular items.

Items may be recalled by eligible borrowers by using the Request feature in Roger, or by contacting the Front Desk of the Geisel or Biomedical Library Buildings. A recall notice will be sent to the original borrower indicating the new due date. The amount of time a user will be given to return a recalled item will vary by item type. A hold pickup notice will be sent to the requestor when the recalled item is returned and available for pickup. If items are returned beyond the recall date they will be subject to overdue charges.

As an alternative to recalling an item from another user, requestors are encouraged to seek the item via Circuit or Interlibrary Loan as a courtesy.

Requesting Items

You can request Library items listed as “Available” in the online catalog to be pulled from the shelf and held at the Self-Service Hold Shelf of your choice (at Geisel, Biomedical Library Building, or SIO, if eligible). Search Roger to identify available materials and select “Request” on the item’s information page. You’ll receive a notice within 1 to 4 business days when the item is available for pick up. It will be held for you for up to 7 days.

Missing Items & Searches

If you cannot find an item on the shelf and it is listed as “Available” in Roger, report it missing by contacting the Front Desk of the Geisel or Biomedical Library Buildings. Library staff will verify the item’s status and shelving location, and initiate a search request if the item cannot be located.
