The UC San Diego Library welcomes donations of materials for our collection. Gifts enhance the existing collection and support the university's commitment to excellence in research and instruction. All donated items are carefully reviewed by library specialists who determine what materials will be added to the collection. Gifts likely to be selected include personal research papers, datasets, letters, manuscripts, and other research materials. Outdated textbooks, popular books and magazines, vinyl sound recordings, reprints, commonly available journals, materials that duplicate what is already owned, and materials in poor condition are generally not accepted for the collection.
Prospective donors, especially those interested in making sizeable donations of materials, are encouraged to first contact the appropriate library subject specialist or the office of the Associate University Librarian for Collection Services. An inventory of donated materials is always helpful to facillitate review, and one may be requested. To ensure maximum accessibility to the Library's resources, donors are asked not to place restrictions on housing, access, processing, or related matters. The Library reserves the right to decline an offer of material that is already held in the collection or that does not meet collection needs.
Donations are accepted with the understanding that all materials become the property of the Regents of the University of California. In compliance with University of California policy, items that are not added to the Library's collection or sent to another UC campus are ordinarily sent to UC San Diego Surplus Sales. Proceeds from these sales are a valued source of revenue for the Library.
Valuation of Gifts
Because federal tax regulations prohibit the Library from giving appraisals or estimates of value of gifts, appraisals are the responsibility of the donor. The Library will, however, provide a list of qualified appraisers upon request. Donors are encouraged to consult a knowledgeable tax expert about current requirements regarding appraisal information and related IRS forms. All gifts will be acknowledged upon request.
