UC To Consider Possible Systemwide Boycott of Nature Publishing Group

Dear Colleagues:

Many of you will have heard about, and possibly even read, the letter distributed to all UC faculty and academic personnel on June 8, 2010. I'd like to provide you the following additional context for that letter.

For several months now, the California Digital Library has been in discussions with the Nature Publishing Group about the impending (2011) renewal of UC's subscription to the NPG journals. As you may know, a 2011 renewal requires 2010 activity (acquisitions, etc.). Given that operating reality, the UC Libraries thought it critical to provide UC's faculty with information about the state of our discussions with the NPG, sooner rather than later. Our colleagues on UC's University Committee on Libraries and Scholarly Communication, chaired by Professor Richard Schneider of UC San Francisco, agreed. Rich and I joined CDL Director Laine Farley in crafting the letter distributed yesterday, with considerable assistance from CDL Associate Director Ivy Anderson.
