Publishing from our holdings, either by means of quotations, in facsimile or by other forms of reproduction, requires permission not only from the holders of copyright but also from the UC San Diego Library. Permission to quote is normally freely given, as is the permission to reproduce text or images for such noncommercial use as illustrating a thesis or a dissertation. The Mandeville Special Collections Library assesses a fee for the publication of reproductions for commercial purposes.
All publication is subject to applicable United States copyright law (Title 17, United States Code). The Library may reserve permission to publish until the applicant demonstrates that necessary permissions from holders of copyright have been secured. The applicant assumes full responsibility for any infringement of copyright or publication rights belonging to the holder of copyright.
Permission to publish is for one-time use.
The Mandeville Special Collections has established a fee schedule for the commercial reproduction of Special Collections material. The fee applies to the reproduction of images only; there is no fee simply for publishing transcribed quotations. This fee is independent of any additional costs that the holder of copyright may chose to levy, and this fee is in addition to any duplication costs associated with preparing reproductions suitable for publication.
$400.00 per image.
Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
