Introduction

This site brings together in one place a wealth of historical information about the UC San Diego campus, largely from the UCSD Archives. The impetus for this site has been preparation for UCSD’s golden anniversary in 2010-2011. However, we intend that this site be a permanent one for the display of historical campus resources, long after the 50th celebration concludes.

An Improbable Venture

Historian Nancy Scott Anderson was commissioned by the campus, in 1988 to chronicle the development of the university from a small shack and pier studying sea life to the mature and vibrant institution it is today.

Marvel Inside a Miracle

Clark Kerr was the president of the University of California system when UC San Diego was founded. At UCSD's 25th anniversary, he returned to campus to give this speech about its founding.
