Digital Media Reserves

In support of media reserves UCSD Libraries offers a new streaming option. Streaming is only one option along with Film and Video Reserves (FVR) other tradition means of media reserves. Streaming can be used if certain criteria is met and approval given by the Film & Video Curator.

Here are some guidelines for considering Digital Media Reserves:

  1. Streaming is an option in support of UCSD course reserves when:
    1. The enrolled number of students exceeds 75.
    2. The course requires student viewing no more than 10 films per quarter or 20 film clips.
    3. The faculty member must provide the film titles to the FVR staff at least 2 weeks before the date the films need to be available to students.
    4. The faculty member must be present for clip creation. Clips will be added to course reserves, and cannot be loaded onto laptops or burned to DVD.
  2. Other support issues:
    1. Digital Media Reserves creates MPEG 4 RV files. Students will need RealPlayer (Set for RTSP links. This can be done from the RealPlayer's preferences. See PDF guide). If off campus, the student must come through Proxy Server found at this link.
    2. Access to material is through UCSD Libraries' course reserves software Docutek Electronic Reserves.
    3. Films made available through the Digital Media Reserves should be owned by the Arts Library. If the Arts Library does not own a particular film, a legal personal copy may be used.
    4. Films will be password protected at the film level. It is expected that faculty will be responsible for distributing these passwords to their students.
    5. Once the course is over, all content links will be removed from Docutek. Digital files will not be stored for re-use.
