PLUS Copyright Compliance

As a service to its customers, PLUS collects the copyright royalty on behalf of the legal rights holder and submits the payment to the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), the largest licenser of text reproduction rights in the world.

Copyright royalty fees charged include a $1.00 royalty process charge.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • I already have an agreement with the CCC. Do I need to pay copyright on items supplied by PLUS?
Normally, such agreements cover only the copying done within your own organization. Because the copies PLUS provides to you are copied at UCSD or another library's location, they are not covered by your agreement, and copyright must be collected by PLUS. If your agreement covers off-site copying, please contact PLUS to make separate arrangements.
  • How much does copyright cost?
The copyright royalty fee is the amount that an author, publisher or other rights-holder charges for permission to reproduce their works or portions of their works. The royalty fee is not set by PLUS or CCC. Although there are some generalizations, copyright royalties vary according to each title and there is no such thing as a "typical" or "average" royalty fee. Nor is the pricing structure standardized. Some copyright fees are calculated according to a per page charge, ranging from $.05/page to $40.00/page or more, some are calculated according to a flat fee, e.g., $2.00 to $35.00 or more, while others are calculated according to a combination of flat fee and per page charge.
  • How can I find out the copyright amount before ordering a document?
Contact PLUS and we will look up the copyright charges for you. You can also go to the Copyright Clearance Center directly and search their Title Catalog. You may also set a limit on how much you are willing to pay for an item. Simply note the amount with your order.
