Finding Course Reserves (2:10 min) - Watch the video to learn how to find course reserve materials that your professors places on reserve through the UCSD libraries.
S&E provides course reserves for undergraduate and graduate science and engineering classes in the following Departments/Programs:

There are three checkout periods for books on class reserves at S&E Library: 3 hours, 24 hours, and 48 hours. The checkout period is determined by the professor for that course. Overnight check out is also available for items with a 3 hour loan period if the item is checked out less than three hours before library closing. There are no checkout periods or fines for electronic reserves and articles can be read by multiple users simultaneously.
Reserve items (books) are kept behind the S&E Circulation Desk. Ask at the desk for the item you need, giving the author's name.
Electronic reserves (articles, course/lecture notes, exam & homework solutions) can be found at http://reserves.ucsd.edu.
To find out if an item is on course reserves, check Roger, the UCSD Online Catalog. Roger will show the location as "S&E Reserves."
To find out if an item is on electronic reserves, check the UCSD Libraries Electronic Reserves site and browse by course number, instructor's name, or search by the article/document author or title. If you are using an off-campus computer, you need to alter your computer settings to use the UCSD proxy server or VPN to read items on electronic reserves. More information about accessing e-reserves is at http://libraries.ucsd.edu/resources/course-reserves.
The S&E Library will place books on Course Reserves. Course materials, such as Journal Articles, Course Notes, Power Point Presentations, Homework Assignments, and Solutions, will be placed on Electronic Reserves as digital images (some file size reduction may be necessary).
To place books on reserve for an undergraduate or graduate course in Bioengineering, Chemistry & Biochemistry, CSE, Earth Sciences, ECE, MAE, Materials Science, Mathematics, Physics or Structural Engineering, you must fill out the Faculty Course Reserves Request Form or mail a completed Faculty Course Reserves Request Form to S&E Library Class Reserves, Mail code 0175E. Reserves lists are processed in the order received.

Please use the web form. For copyright compliance please include complete citation and publisher information.
Allow at least three working days of processing time for all materials submitted for electronic reserves. If you want a netLibrary book on Reserves for your class, we can alter the standard UCSD netLibrary checkout period for a book from 24 hours to 2 hours.

Please note: It is the instructor's responsibility to submit material for course reserves which complies with Title 17 of the U.S. copyright law.
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, US Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would invoke violation of copyright law.
While there is no limit, we suggest that you limit your list to required and recommended reading. Our experience with longer lists is that some books remain completely unread by quarter's end, thus inconveniencing other library users who want to take out these items.
The S&E Library will attempt to order any book needed for course reserves. Items at the UCSD Bookstore can be processed in about 10 days. Please allow three to five weeks for titles ordered from the publisher to become available on reserve at the S&E Library. For fastest service (three days), we encourage you to submit personal or departmental copies of reserve materials. Personal copies will be returned promptly after finals.
If the UCSD Libraries does not have the article you need for class reading, we will obtain a copy through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and post the article on electronic reserves for your class (copyright permitting). Please allow 4-7 working days for articles obtained through ILL to be posted on your course site.
Visit http://libraries.ucsd.edu/resources/course-reserves for information on electronic and digital reserves at other UCSD Libraries.
The UCSD Libraries's policy for course reserve services is derived from the fair use provisions of United States Copyright Act of 1976. Section 107 of the Copyright Act expressly permits the making of multiple copies for classroom use. Please read the policy for details.
