2. Where do I find my course reserves ? Are there any reserves books in S&E
All course reserves for undergraduate and graduate science and engineering classes in the following Departments/Programs are now available at the Geisel Library Circulation Desk located right inside the front entrance. The S&E Library no longer houses course reserves materials.
3. How long can I keep a reserve item?
There are two checkout periods for books on class reserves: 3 hours and 24 hours. The checkout period is determined by the professor for that course. Most course materials may be checked out for 3 hours. Professors may request that books check out for 24 hours. Three hours is recommended for highly used books; 24 hours is recommended for books that will be used to write papers, optional readings, or books that very few students will use.
Overnight check out is also available for 3-hour items if items are checked out less than three hours before the Geisel Circulation Desk closes. Overnight items are due back by 10 a.m. on weekdays and by noon (12:00 p.m.) on Saturdays and Sundays.
Please return your reserve items on time to avoid overdue fines. Overdue fines begin accruing immediately after the item becomes due. Late fees start right away at $10.00 and increase at a rate of $10.00 for each additional late hour.

Please note: It is the instructor's responsibility to submit material for course reserves which complies with Title 17 of the U.S. copyright law.
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, US Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would invoke violation of copyright law.
9. Is there any limit on the number of materials that can be put on reserve for my course?
While there is no limit, we suggest that you limit your list to required and recommended reading. Our experience with longer lists is that some books remain completely unread by quarter's end, thus inconveniencing other library users who want to take out these items.
10. What if the library does not own the item I'd like to put on reserve?
The Library will attempt to order any book needed for course reserves. Items at the UCSD Bookstore can be processed in about 10 days. Please allow three to five weeks for titles ordered from the publisher to become available on reserve at the Geisel Library circulation desk. For fastest service (three days), we encourage you to submit personal or departmental copies of reserve materials. Personal copies will be returned promptly after finals.
If the UCSD Libraries does not have the article you need for class reading, we will obtain a copy through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and post the article on electronic reserves for your class (copyright permitting). Please allow 4-7 working days for articles obtained through ILL to be posted on your course site.
