New Print and Copy Card system coming to UC San Diego Libraries

The UC San Diego Libraries current card access system for printing and photocopying will be replaced in early September 2009.

This change will allow all UC San Diego students, faculty, staff and affiliates to swipe their Campus Photo ID cards in the libraries for printing and copying. Read more...

Where can I make a photocopy?

Self service photocopy machines are located on both floors of the S&E Library. S&E's microfiche reader/copier is located on the 2nd floor near the S&E technical reports/microforms collection. (Reader/copiers for microfilm are over in the SSHL Current Periodicals, Newspapers and Microforms area--west wing, 1st floor.)

All self-service photocopiers accept only UCSD photocopy debit cards, which may be purchased from machine dispensers at any campus library or from Imprints (UCSD's copier service located in the east wing on the main level of the Geisel Library building.

The card dispensers do not take coin change (eliminating the considerable cost of collecting, counting and transporting coins has made it possible to lower the cost of copies for library users) nor do they make change for large bills. If your visit to the UCSD libraries requires photocopies or printing, keep in mind that other than the staff at Imprints, library employees are not prepared to make change for you. For Imprints' hours, call 534-2534.

Where can I print files?

Library Infostations are connected to Networked Printers throughout the Geisel Building. There is a black/white networked printer located in the middle of the main floor of S&E and there is a color networked printer located on the main floor in the west wing of Geisel. There are also 3 printers (including 1 color printer) networked to the S&E ACS PC's and iMacs (2nd floor) and the 1 Social Science & Humanities Library PC/Mac Lab (1st floor corridor) which use ACS deposit print accounts. Follow the instructions provided for the particular station at which you are working.

Wireless Printing

Users with their own Windows laptops may now print to the libraries' networked laser printers by downloading and installing a small piece of software that adds our printers. Instructions and system requirements are found here: http://libraries.ucsd.edu/services/print.htm.

How much does it cost? How do I get a card?

Imprints photocopiers and printers charge 10 cents/page. The initial price of a debit card is $1.00. You are charged $.50 for the card and you get $.50 for the first 5 copies. The card can be re-used and more value can be added to it at anytime. We recommend writing your name and contact information on the card in case you loose it while in the library.

Debit cards: debit card vending machines are located in all libraries. In S&E the vending machine is located on the main floor near the ACS Computer Lab. You may also purchase cards by check at the Copier Services Office just outside the door to S&E. Information on obtaining debit cards purchased with index numbers is available at Imprints card services pages.

Can Library staff photocopy materials for me?

S&E Library staff will retrieve, scan and electronically deliver materials for faculty, staff and students on request. Costs for delivered materials will be charged to your UCSD index number (budget number). Charges begin at $3.50 per article, $0.15 per each exposure over the first 50, for materials in paper format. Materials in micro format begin at $3.50 per article, $0.30 per exposure after the first 15. Send your request by form, e-mail scilib@ucsd.edu, or call 534-1219.

If faculty staff and students retrieve materials themselves then prices for staff to photocopy it begin at $.15 per page for print materials and $.30 per page for items in micro format.

Default delivery is to your computer; please specify if paper photocopy desired. Allow 1-2 working days for delivery.

Other users who need photocopies should contact the UCSD PLUS program.

Printing from ACS Computer Labs

In order to use ACS laser printers in the Computer Labs, you'll first need to setup a UCSD student "laser printing account" online. For more information, see ACS's page of information about student accounts.

Under the "fair use" provision of the Copyright Act of 1976, you are permitted to photocopy and distribute portions of copyrighted works for educational use without securing permission from the owner or paying royalties. The law in this area is quite general, however, and it is important that certain conditions are met to insure that the copying does fall under this fair use exemption.
