Getting Started with RSS

What's ?
We offer an RSS feed for Science & Engineering Library News. RSS feeds let you keep track of new content on frequently-updated web sites without:

  • visiting and revisiting those web sites repeatedly to check for updates
  • setting up and managing e-mail subscriptions

How do I use the feeds?
First, you'll need an RSS reader because the feeds are written in XML (Extensible Markup Language) and are not meant to be read unaided. The reader also allows you to subscribe and unsubscribe to feeds, checks for updates, and lets you know where theree is new content.

There are many readers available, including desktop readers like FeedDemon and web-based readers like Bloglines. RSS readers have also been built into the FireFox and Safari browsers.

How do I subscribe to the S&E Library Blog?
To subscribe to our feed, just "right-click" on the orange button below to copy the link. Then select the add or subscribe option in your reader, and paste the link where indicated. This is the typical way to add feeds to your reader.

Where do I find more RSS feeds? [Our list of recommended Science/Engineering feeds]
A growing number of web sites are offering feeds, including blogs, news organizations, journal publishers and database providers. Some sites now offer feeds as a way to distribute audio or even video files, which you can then listen to or view on your computer or iPod.

Sites that offer feeds often indicate this by using buttons like , or , or text like "RSS Feeds" or "Syndicate This Site." Firefox and Safari have an autodetection feature to alert you when you are on a site with available RSS feeds.
