Journal Articles for Oceanography & Earth Sciences

  • AQUATIC SCIENCES AND FISHERIES ABSTRACTS (ASFA)
    • ASFA is a premier reference for aquatic resources, covering over 5,000 serial publications, books, reports, conference proceedings, etc. Coverage is 1971 - to present, mainly in the areas of aquaculture, aquatic organisms, aquatic pollution, conservation, fisheries, marine biotechnology, policy and legislation, and wildlife management.
  • ARCTIC & ANTARCTIC REGIONS (AAR)
    • AAR indexes & provides some abstracts on polar & non-polar cold regions. AAR goes back to 1800 and earlier (depending on the component database) and indexes periodicals, books, conference proceedings, reports, & theses/dissertations. Includes NSF's Antarctic Bibliography.
  • BEILSTEIN CROSSFIRE MINERVA
    • BEILSTEIN corresponds to the multivolume Beilstein Handbook of Organic Chemistry. Search over 6,000,000 organic compounds by structure, reaction, or property values. Beilstein is especially useful for marine natural products searching.
  • BIOSIS PREVIEWS
    • BIOSIS PREVIEWS indexes & abstracts nearly 6000 journals as well as conference proceedings, books, & technical reports in all aspects of biological sciences including biological oceanography, marine biology, marine ecology, developmental biology, molecular biology, psychology, etc starting in 1926.

  • CHEMICAL ABSTRACTS (CA)/ SCIFINDER SCHOLAR
    • CA indexes over 8,000 serials and patents in the chemical literature back to 1907. Chemical Abstracts is comprehensive for chemistry; search for marine chemistry, geochemistry, natural product chemistry, biochemistry, etc. Includes structure and substructure searching.
  • COMPENDEX
    • COMPENDEX indexes & abstracts 4500 journals & 2000 conference proceedings as well as books & technical reports for engineering including ocean engineering & technology, coastal engineering, etc from 1884+.

  • ENTREZ
  • GEOREF
    • GEOREF indexes over 3500 serial publications in geology, seismology, marine geology, geophysics, geological maps, etc from 1785+ for North America & from 1933+ for outside North America. Abstracts are available from core journals for the last few years.
  • INSPEC
    • INSPEC indexes and abstracts over 4200 journals & over 2000 conference proceedings as well as books and technical reports in physics, electronics, & computing including geophysics, physical oceanography, instrumentation, ocean acoustics, computers, electronics, some climatology, etc back to 1898.

  • JOURNAL CITATION REPORTS (JCR)
    • JCR offers a systematic, objective means to critically evaluate the world's leading journals, with quantifiable, statistical information based on citation data. By compiling articles and cited references, JCR helps to measure research influence and impact at the journal and category levels, and shows the relationship between citing and cited journals. Available in Science and Social Sciences editions, JCR works via the Web of Knowledge platform, similar to Web of Science and BIOSIS.
  • MATHSCINET
    • MATHSCINET indexes the mathematics literature from 1940+. Review texts are available from 1980+. MathSciNet is a great place to search for modelling & statistical methods in oceanography, climatology, ecology, etc.
  • METEOROLOGICAL & GEOASTROPHYSICAL ABSTRACTS (MGA)
    • MGA indexes & abstracts over 750 journals & other series as well as books & conference proceedings on meteorology, climatology, atmospheric chemistry & physics, physical oceanography, hydrology, glaciology, & related environmental sciences from 1974+.
    • THANK YOU: Startup and backfile funding assistance in the CD-ROM era of MGA was received from Charlie & Mary Louise Robins and David P Rogers.
  • PAIS INTERNATIONAL
    • PAIS International indexes & abstracts journals & other series as well as books, government reports & conference proceedings on public affairs and policy from 1972+ on conservation, marine policy, coastal zone development, etc.
  • WEB OF SCIENCE (WOS) / WEB OF KNOWLEDGE (Science Citation Index, SCI)
    • WOS covers 5,600 journals from scientific disciplines from 1900 to present. Coverage is limited to top-rated science journals by ISI's methodology; use other in-depth databases on this page for stronger coverage of specific disciplines. Citations include abstracts. Search for articles that cite an author or article or search for articles by subject, author, etc.

  • WORLDCAT
    • WORLDCAT is a combined catalog of thousands of libraries, including the UCSD Libraries. Search WorldCat if you want to search the largest universe of book and other cataloged items.
  • ZOOLOGICAL RECORD (ZR)
    • ZR indexes & provides some abstracts for over 6,500 zoological serials, books, newsletters, selected dissertations, review annuals, & conference proceedings back to 1864. ZR covers the traditional areas of zoology more comprehensively than BIOSIS Previews (such as ecology, physiology, systematics & taxonomy, evolution, life history, behavior, conservation, nutrition, reproduction, morphology & zoogeography). ZR excludes or covers selectively more experimental & applied topics (such as biochemistry, economic biology, laboratory animal research, & immunology).
