Permission to Publish Archives Materials

Researchers who wish to quote extensively from materials in the Scripps Archives, or wish to reproduce a full text in facsimile form, or publish images, audio, film, or video material should discuss their request with the Archives staff. Researchers must fill out and submit a Request for Permission to Publish Photos or Text form .

Scripps Archives is unable to conduct copyright searches and cannot counsel researchers on the application of copyright law. Permission to publish is offered subject to the following conditions:

  • the request complies with Scripps Archives donor agreements
  • the request does not violate U.S. Copyright Law

Scripps Archives, grants only one-time non-exclusive rights for publication/use in a single product. Granting permission to publish does not transfer copyright nor does it remove the researcher’s responsibility to guard against infringement of the copyrights that may be held by others.

Scripps Archives charges a use fee to researchers from outside the University of California community. A licensing agreement is required for the use of material from the Scripps Archives in films, broadcasts, CD-ROM, etc.

Please use the following credit line whenever an image from the archives is published: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Archives, UC San Diego Libraries.
