Theater

Collection Statement

Collections at UCSD support both the preparation of professional theater artists (in acting, directing, playwriting, and all areas of theatrical design) and the Ph.D.-level study of dramatic criticism, theater and performance history, and performance theory. Scholarly and/or performance editions of plays and other performance texts, in both the original language and in English translation when available, are acquired at a research level, particularly those that originate in the U.S., U.K., Melanesia, Western Europe, and the Caribbean and at more selective levels from other world regions. Dramatic criticism is acquired (usually on literature funds) to support undergraduate, M.A., and Ph.D-level study. (Efforts are underway to begin coordinating the purchase of advanced-level criticism and critical theory between the UCSD and UC-Irvine libraries.) Scholarly and reference works supporting theater and performance history, particularly for the U.S., U.K., western Europe, with a particular emphasis on U.S. ethnic theater, are acquired at a research level. Finally, books and video/DVD formats are acquired to supplement the teaching and studio work in the technique and artistry of acting, directing, design (costume, lighting, sets), writing, and producing for the live theater.

There is no excellent, comprehensive online index to materials about the many aspects of theater. For dramatic criticism, use: MLA International Bibliography

For a limited amount of indexing and full text, use: International Index to the Performing Arts
