East New Britain Province Patrol Reports

This publication is a guide to the microfiche of government patrol reports for East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea. These reports were written between 1946 and 1974. Reports from West New Britain Province, which was created as a separate district in 1966, have been filmed as a separate set of microfiche.

The microfiche for East New Britain Province reproduce 58 files, comprising 297 patrol reports. Also listed in this guide are four additional files (see nos. 30, 31, 35, and 36) for Pomio, containing 19 patrol reports, which were filmed with the reports for West New Britain.

The National Archives of Papua New Guinea is the custodian of the original reports. Similar microfiche have been produced for the patrol reports of the other provinces of Papua New Guinea, and corresponding guides for each province are also in preparation.

This microfiche was filmed in Port Moresby by and for the National Archives of Papua New Guinea, with support from the University of California, San Diego. The microfiche and this guide are the results of a cooperative project between the National Archives of Papua New Guinea, and the Melanesian Studies Resource Center (MSRC) at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).

The project has several objectives; the first and most important of these is to preserve all of the patrol reports held in the National Archives, by making microfiche copies of them. The National Archives has generously provided the technical work, and microfilming labor and equipment for making these copies. UCSD has provided funds for blank microfilm and chemicals. The preservation microfilm masters are held in the National Archives.

The project's second aim is to create indexing to the reports, providing access by points such as areas patrolled and patrol officers. The indexes have been generated from databases running on Pro-Cite software, compiled by staff at the MSRC. The databases may be searched in San Diego and at the National Archives. In the near future, additional access to the databases will be made available through the Internet/World Wide Web.

The third goal of the project is to make the patrol reports accessible to scholars outside of Papua New Guinea. To this end, the microfiche have been made available for purchase from the National Archives. The files are arranged by patrol post and year. This guide lists each file in the order filmed and provides an index to patrol officers. A geographic index is also provided, although it indexes only those geographic terms appearing on the title pages of the reports--as such, it is incomplete. To find all of the references to a certain locale (village, etc.), it is necessary to search the complete microfiche file for the appropriate subdistrict.

Entries include the following information:

Entry number. Patrol post. -- Years covered by patrols. -- Patrol officers. -- Extent of file (number of pages). -- Number of patrol reports in file. -- Geographic index terms (areas patrolled). -- Microfiche location (first fiche # : frame # - last fiche # : frame #).

Each entry covers a group of patrol reports--all the reports for a patrol post or other subunit, such as a census division, for a given year or years. For example, all the reports for Chuave, 1964-65. The years are generally the government fiscal year, from July to June of the following year.

The information on number of reports, extent, patrol officers, and areas patrolled, has been taken directly from the contents pages supplied by the National Archives, rather than from the reports themselves. Thus, it must be noted that this information is somewhat incomplete. For example, not all of the geographic names noted in a patrol report have been indexed.

The microfiche location consists of the following information: Province and subunit as given at the head of the microfiche, followed by the number/frame of the first page of the reports, and finally the number/frame of the last page of the reports. For example: Microfiche location : Eastern Highlands : Goroka : 001 : 003 - 004 : 0054 means that the reports may be found on the fiche for Goroka, starting on fiche 1, frame 3 and ending on fiche 4, frame 54.

Indexes of patrol officers and areas patrolled have been included at the back of this publication. The numbers following each index term are entry numbers which refer back to the main list.
