Library materials may be checked out at the front desk of the Geisel Library or the Biomedical Library Building or by using the self-checkout machines located near the entrance of either building. A valid UC San Diego photo ID or a UC San Diego Library borrowing card with a photo ID is required for borrowing privileges.
Library materials, excluding course reserves, may be returned to either the Geisel Library or the Biomedical Library Building. Return items at the front desk of either building by using the return slot or handing the material directly to a Library staff member, in which case a receipt can be issued upon request. In addition, Geisel Library has external return slots and provides drive-up return bins in the upper parking lot at the end of Hopkins Drive.
Borrowers with renewal privileges may renew items online, by telephone, or in person. With a few exceptions most Library materials can be renewed online by selecting "My Library Account" in ROGER. Material can be renewed over the telephone by calling either Library building's front desk. Items may also be renewed in person. Items that are recalled, on hold for another patron, or in fine status cannot be renewed. Requests for interlibrary loan renewals must be made at least 1 week prior to the due date by contacting the Interlibrary Loan unit.
Borrowers with recall privileges may recall any item that is currently checked out. Recalling an item moves up its due date to ensure that it will be returned in a timely manner and can be placed on hold for the requestor. Hold privileges allow a borrower to be next in line for a particular item. Unlike a recall, a hold does not change the due date. To place a hold or a recall, contact the front desk of either Library building. UC San Diego faculty, staff, or graduate students may also use the Request option in ROGER to hold or recall items. A pickup notice will be sent to the requestor as soon as a held or recalled item has been returned to the Library. Failure to return a held or recalled item by its due date may result in the temporary suspension of library privileges and issuance of a library bill.
If an item is listed as "AVAILABLE" in ROGER but appears to be missing from the shelves, please ask for assistance at the front desk of either Library building. Library staff will verify the item's status and shelving location and will initiate a search request if the item cannot be located.
