Borrowing Library Material

Checking Out Library Materials

UC San Diego library materials are checked out at the circulation desk at each UC San Diego library. A valid UC San Diego photo identification card or a UC San Diego library borrowing card with a photo ID is required for borrowing privileges.

Return, Renew, Recall and Holds

UC San Diego library material, excluding course reserves items, may be returned to any UC San Diego library. All UC San Diego library circulation desks offer convenient return bins. In addition, Geisel Library and Scripps Institution of Oceanography Library offer external return slots. The Geisel Library also provides drive-up book return bins in the upper parking lot at the end of Hopkins Drive . Material may also be returned directly to a library circulation desk staff member. Items will be checked in immediately, and upon request, a receipt will be issued.

The UC San Diego Libraries offer three ways to renew items for individuals who have renewal privileges. They include: online, telephone, or in person renewals. With a few exceptions, most material can be renewed using the My Library Account option in ROGER. By following a few simple steps, loan periods can be extended without standing in line or waiting on hold. Material can be renewed over the telephone by calling any UC San Diego library circulation desk. Items may be renewed in person. Items that are recalled, on hold for another patron, or in fine status cannot be renewed. Requests for interlibrary loan renewals must be made at least 1 week prior to the due date by contacting the Interlibrary Loan unit.

Borrowers with recall privileges may place a recall on any item that is currently checked out, altering the due date so that the item will be returned sooner and placed on hold. Hold privileges allow borrowers to place a hold on most checked out items. Unlike a recall, a hold will not change the current due date of an item. To place a hold or a recall, contact any UC San Diego Libraries circulation desk. UC San Diego faculty, staff, or graduate student, may also use the Request option in ROGER to place a hold or recall items. We cannot guarantee when a held or recalled item will be returned, however, a pickup notice will be sent immediately upon receipt. Failure to return a held or recalled item by its due date may result in the temporary suspension of library privileges and issuance of a library bill.

Missing Items

Please ask for assistance at the circulation desk of any UC San Diego library for any items listed as "AVAILABLE" in ROGER, but which appear to be missing from the shelves. Library staff may verify the status and shelving location of the item and may initiate a search request if the item cannot be located. Please ask for assistance at the owning library's circulation desk as each UC San Diego library employs it's own search policy.
