Installation Instructions

  1. If prompted, choose Save As and save to your desktop.
  2. If you are using personal firewall software e.g. ZoneAlarm, Symantec Personal Firewall, eTrust, etc. then you will need to temporarily disable that software now.
  3. Run the file you just downloaded and click the Install button.
  4. This will install drivers for two printers and some associated software. Please note: we're finding the installation will "hiccup" in some cases. If so, just run the application you downloaded and hit the Install button again.
  5. If you are using a personal firewall software program to protect your computer, you will want to configure it to allow the following programs to access the Internet: psnotify.exe and uniupdater.exe. This will let the printing software check for updates such as new drivers for our printers.

Please note:
When you send a print job to a printer, you will be asked to make up a username and password for the job. The username lets you identify your job in the queue, and the password ensures that no-one else can see or print your job.

Frequently-Asked Questions

What is the cost of using this software?
The software is free but you will be charged .10 cents/page for black & white and 50 cents/page for color printing.

I am getting a "Add Printer Failed: Printer already exists" error what do I do?
Sometimes the installer stops partway through the process, and only partially installs one of the required printers, in which case the above error message will appear if you try the installation again. To fix this, go to your Printers & Faxes folder and remove B&W Printers - UCSD Libraries and/or Color Printers - UCSD Libraries and try the installation again. We're not sure why this is happening and are looking into it.

Why am I getting a permissions error when attempting to install?
The installation of the new printers requires that you be logged in with an account that has administrator level privileges. Please verify that you have sufficient privileges or login as Administrator and install.

Why do I have to turn off my firewall software?
The printing software requires access to certain ports in order to contact the UCSD printer server for updates and additions to the printer queue

I am getting an "Unable to get a list of ports error" what do I do?
Click OK then click the finish button, check to insure that any firewall software is disabled, then restart the installation.

If I followed your installation instructions and tried everything in your FAQ's and I still can't get things to work what should I do?
If you can not get the application to properly install and function on your PC you will need to use an ACS Lab or Library computer instead.

What about my Mac laptop?
At this time, the Libraries are only providing this software for Windows computers. We are currently working on a Mac version of this software.
