Write an Effective Data Management Plan

We support the easy-to-use DMPTool to create an effective Data Management Plan.  The DMPTool is an online tool that guides you through the creation of ready-to-use DMPs for inclusion in funding agency-specific proposals. The DMPTool provides step-by-step instructions and UC San Diego-specific guidance for your data management plan as you build it.

A comprehensive Data Management Plan (DMP) is a formal document which outlines guidelines and requirements to help you organize and manage your data during and after the the research project.  There are significant benefits from developing a DMP.  Some of these benefits are:

  • Meets specific data management requirements mandated by grant funding agencies.

  • Increases research impact and visibility by planning better data management practices.

  • Simplifies the research process to easily find your data when you need it.

  • Avoids duplication of data.

  • Saves you time which allows you more time to focus on your research.

An effective DMP will cover specific data management requirements established by grant funding agencies, such as the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health and Institute of Museum and Library Services.  When starting your DMP, consider the general descriptive components which include:

  • Descriptive information about data collected.

  • Data format and standards.

  • Policies for others to access and share your data.

  • Policies for re-use and re-distribution for allowing others to use your data.

  • Archiving and long-term storage plans.
