Eligible Users
Open to current UC students, faculty, and staff only. Valid UCSD ID card required during overnight hours. On request, users must show valid UCSD-issued ID card to library staff, campus police, or other campus security officers to verify eligibility. Users without valid UCSD-issued ID card must leave the building until regular library hours resume.
Location & Access
Main/2nd floor of Geisel's East Wing only (2nd floor of Science & Engineering Library). After midnight, eligible users may enter through main entrance and proceed to East Wing. Access prohibited to closed & staff-only areas.
Services
Basic safety & security is provided overnight. Other library services are not provided. Security staff will report equipment problems, but cannot provide computer, printing, reserves, or research assistance.
Hours
Overnight hours begin at midnight (00:00) and end at 7:30 a.m. (07:30) Monday through Friday. Available during fall, winter, and spring academic quarters only (excluding campus holidays). Policies include any additional overnight hours or areas offered during final exam periods.

Amenities
Seating available for about 500, including 100 computer workstations as well as large & small study tables, individual study carrels, comfortable chairs, group study rooms. Electrical outlets, copiers, and scanner also available.
Security & Reporting Problems
Library Security staff provided to ensure safety & security overnight. Report security problems or concerns to Security staff on duty or email Security_Officers@AD.ucsd.edu.
Overnight Study Commons is distinct from the S&E Library. Report non-emergency problems related to Overnight Study Commons to Overnight_Non-Emergencies@ucsd.edu, rather than to S&E staff.

Report emergencies to Security staff on duty, call Campus Police at 858-534-4357, or call 911.
Use Policies
- Conduct: The UCSD Student Conduct Code & UCSD Library Use & Conduct Code apply to all library areas at all times. For safety & security, these additional policies apply to the Geisel Overnight Study Commons. Failure to follow these policies may result in temporary or permanent loss of access to UCSD library facilities.
- Food & Drink: Library food & drink policy applies overnight in the study commons. In compliance with California State Law, UCSD policy prohibits consumption of alcohol. Dispose of trash & recyclables in appropriate containers and clean spills, crumbs, and sticky surfaces immediately. Notify security staff for larger spills.
- Sleeping: University policy (PPM 516-10.3) restricts library areas from being used for sleeping or living quarters. Camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags) & furniture arrangements designed for sleeping are not permitted.
