Computing

Productivity Workstations (most of the library computers)


  • Require student, staff, or faculty login via Active Directory account.
  • Offer a full range of research and productivity software, including Microsoft Office.
  • Small selection of workstations available for non-affiliates via staff login in Geisel West Commons (2nd Floor) during selected, posted hours; see Research Assistance Desk for help and login.
  • Configured and serviced by campus ITS under the coordination of the Library’s Learning Spaces Program.
  • Workstations are updated and rebooted each night; any user data on the hard drive is erased. Save your work on external media or the cloud, or email your files to yourself.
  • Users can select the black and white printer network or the color printer network from any productivity workstation.

InfoStation Computers


  • Open to the public without login.
  • Offer Internet access, but not word processing or other Office programs.
  • Major file formats are supported and printing, downloading, and e-mailing results are available.
  • Configured and serviced by Library ITS under the coordination of the Library’s Learning Spaces Program.
  • Workstations are updated and rebooted each night; any user data on the hard drive is erased.  Save your work on external media or the cloud, or email your files to yourself. 
  • Users can select the black and white printer network or the color printer network from any InfoStation.
  • Windows PCs only.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
 

  • Four docking stations are available in the Geisel East Commons (2nd Floor) for those bringing their own laptop, but who wish to use a full-size keyboard, monitor, and mouse.  
  • These stations offer VGA, DVI, Displayport, and mini-Displayport (Apple thunderbolt) video hookups.
  • Peer Consultants at the nearby service desk can provide assistance during desk hours.
  • Many items to support BYOD activities (e.g., adapters and chargers) are available in Geisel's Tech Lending Program.

Tech Lending Program (TLP)
 

  • The TLP loans technology items like adapters, chargers, flash drives, and digital cameras to UCSD faculty, staff, and students.
  • Tech items may be checked out from the Media Desk, Geisel West (1st floor) or the Geisel East Commons desk (2nd floor) during open hours.
  • Do a keyword search in Roger for the item you want, or search Tech Lending Program for a browseable list.  You can also view our inventory of media tools, chargers / cables / adapters, and productivity items



Wireless Information


  • Visit the campus wireless overview or see more details on wireless connectivity and printing in the library.

Software



Laptops for Checkout


  • The Biomedical Library Building (BLB) offers 5 wireless-equipped laptops for 3-hour checkout and use within the library to UCSD faculty, staff, medical students, and graduate students.
  • These Windows laptops provide wireless Internet access and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Contact BLB Front Desk at (858) 534-3253 with questions.

Multimedia Production & Editing


  • Digital Media Lab in Geisel Library is a multimedia production / postproduction studio
  • Details about multimedia production & editing in the Library.
  • Information on campus's Media Teaching Lab.
  • Many items to support BYOD activities (e.g., adapters and chargers) are available in Geisel's Tech Lending Program.

Media Viewing Stations


  • Workstations for viewing audio/visual materials held by the Library or on course reserves are available in Geisel West (1st Floor).
  • Visit the nearby Media Desk for details and assistance during open hours.
  • Three group viewing rooms are also available in Geisel West (1st Floor) for viewing these materials.

Data & GIS Lab

  • UCSD faculty, staff, and students may use computer labs located throughout campus. Faculty may also reserve some of these labs for limited times during the quarter for classes.
