El Metate. 1953. "Cattle ranch at the end of the road. Water from a spring is used to irrigate a small garden. Just south of here is the peak of San Juan de Dios, 4,300 ft. high, while to the north looms another barren mountain, El Matomí, 4,500 ft.

San Fernando Mission (Franciscan, 1769). 1950s. "The place, known to the Indians as Guiricatá, or Velicatá, was discovered by the Jesuit Padre Link in 1766. The Jesuits were expelled before they could establish a mission here, but this was done in 1769 by the Franciscan Fr. Junípero Serra, on his way to Upper California."
