Papers of the poet Gael Turnbull (1928-2004), containing correspondence, manuscripts of poems, translations, and ephemera. The correspondence consists of letters written to the poet and editor Cid Corman (1924-2004) during the period 1965-1982.

Gael Lundin Turnbull was born on April 7, 1928, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He received a B.A. from Cambridge University (1948) and an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania (1951). In addition to his career as a physician and anesthesiologist, he was also an accomplished poet who published over twenty volumes of poetry. In 1957, Turnbull started Migrant Press and its journal Migrant, which published modernist poetry by British and American poets. He died in England in 2004.

Scope and Content of Series

Series 1) LETTERS TO CID CORMAN: This series dates from 1966 to 1982 and contains over sixty letters from Turnbull to fellow poet Cid Corman. Topics of discussion include poetry, Turnbull's hospital duties, his family life, and their mutual friends, including Basil Bunting, who was a strong influence on Turnbull. The letters are arranged chronologically.

Scope and Content of Series

Series 2) MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS: Typescripts of the poem Iliados A, a typescript of the essay "On Translating Homer or Anyone Else," a printed broadside of the poem "Aurora," a program for a production of the play The Real McCoy, and manuscripts and printed editions of the poem "Seven from Stifford's Bridge." The materials are arranged alphabetically.
