A 35mm color slide show and 16mm color film documentary of the early history (1963-1967) of the University of California, San Diego, created by Charles Graves. The two formats were photographed nearly simultaneously and include the construction and dedication of Revelle College, social and political activities of the first undergraduate class, the first Watermelon Drop, and the inauguration of John Galbraith, UC San Diego's second chancellor. The images also document the natatorium construction, Camp Matthews and the dedication of Bonner Hall. The film version has been reformatted to VHS videotape and digitized.

Charles Graves, a physician from La Jolla, California, photographed the early development of UC San Diego.

Scope and Content of Series

Series 1) SLIDES: 35mm color slides document the construction and dedication of Revelle College, the dedication of Bonner Hall and student activities including elections, the student senate and the first Watermelon Drop. Also depicted are Camp Matthews buildings and the inauguration of the second chancellor John S. Galbraith on November 5, 1965. The slides are organized in groups to represent the four slide trays in which they were originally housed. Graves's manuscript notes precede the slides and his descriptions are included in each folder heading. All materials from the collection have been digitized.
