Summary: Ángel Herrero Álvarez was born in 1924 in Valderrueda, León. Ángel recounts moving to Madrid at age nine to live with his brother. He recalls witnessing the outbreak of the Civil War in Madrid. In 1937, Ángel was evacuated from Madrid. He remembers spending time in Alicante and then fleeing with hundreds of children from Barcelona to Brest, France. Ángel boarded a ship that took him from France to Leningrad. He tells of studying in the Soviet Union. Ángel later fought against the Nazis during World War II. He describes being captured and then detained in a Nazi concentration camp. Ángel relates that after being released from the camp in 1943, he was transported back to Spain under the Falange’s surveillance.
