Historical Background
Robert Glasheen provided photographic services to the University of California, San Diego between 1964 and 1986. He operated a business in La Jolla called Glasheen Graphics and usually worked on a fee-for-service basis for the Public Information Office.
Scope and Content
The Robert Glasheen Photograph Collection contains images of University of California, San Diego faculty, staff, campus life, buildings, and events taken between 1964 and 1986 by Robert Glasheen. Also included are negatives from Glasheen's commercial studio in La Jolla. The collection is arranged in nine series: 1) PORTRAITS, 2) GROUP PORTRAITS, 3) BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS, 4) EVENTS, 5) COLOR SLIDES, 6) PRINTS, 7) CONTACT SHEETS, 8) OVERSIZE PRINTS, and 9) COMMERCIAL STUDIO NEGATIVES.
SERIES 1: PORTRAITS
The PORTRAITS series documents many important faculty, administrators and staff during the early years of the campus. As an outside, contract photographer for the Public Information Office, Glasheen would typically receive an assignment, shoot a roll or two of film of the subject and print selected images. Included are Chancellors York, Galbraith, McGill, McElroy and Atkinson.
SERIES 2: GROUP PORTRAITS
The GROUP PORTRAITS series contains images of the first five chancellors, Nobel Prize winners at or affiliated with UCSD and a group photograph of the UC Regents taken at an on-campus meeting in 1984.
SERIES 3: BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS
The BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS series provides excellent documention of the architecture and development of the built environment at UCSD during the 1960s and 1970s. The photographs often show construction and early landscaping. The images focus on the Revelle, Muir and Third College campuses.
SERIES 4: EVENTS
Subjects in the EVENTS series range from a Jalapeno Eating Contest to Chancellor McGill's inaugural reception. Glasheen was particularly active in his coverage of the Chancellor's Associates events, visiting dignitaries and inaugural celebrations.
SERIES 5: COLOR SLIDES
The COLOR SLIDES series contains general images from Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the general campus.
SERIES 6: PRINTS
The PRINTS series contains miscellaneous black and white prints showing campus life. Also included are the test prints of the color enlargements made for the Faculty Club.
SERIES 7: CONTACT SHEETS
The CONTACT SHEETS series comprises the largest and most important group of images in the collection. Organized chronologically by year, the contact sheets represent the body of Glasheen's work at UCSD.
SERIES 8: OVERSIZE PRINTS
The OVERSIZE PRINTS series contains images from previous series that are enlarged.
SERIES 9: COMMERCIAL STUDIO NEGATIVES
This series contains 4x5 inch black and white negatives from non-UCSD projects. The negatives are arranged in chronological order and are located in the Archives Negative File.
