Abstract

The Marquis Collection of French Revolution Prints contains documentary prints, mainly engravings, which portray events, scenes and historical figures of the French Revolution. Included in the collection are 24 maps of France and Paris. The items date from the period 1777 to 1879. The majority of the prints were produced in France, with a smaller number originating in England, Germany, Holland, and the United States. The captions or text accompanying the prints are in French, German, Dutch, or English. The collection is organized into four series: 1) PORTRAITS, 2) SCENES AND EVENTS, 3) MAPS AND VIEWS, and 4) OTHER DOCUMENTS which include currency, caricatures, diagrams, and a handbill. Except for PORTRAITS, which are arranged alphabetically by subject, each series is arranged by size with items of smaller dimensions preceding those of larger dimensions. Included in the collection is an index card file for selected items created by the donor indicating the source of the item, some bibliographic information and the item number. The index card file is located in Box 2. Books received in the accession have been separated from the collection and added elsewhere to the library's holdings. To identify and list these items, conduct an author search in ROGER on the term "Goldfarb, Alice former owner."
