The bulk of the materials date from 1989 to 1992 and document the editorial and publishing process for the poetry anthologies Men of Our Time: An Anthology of Male Poetry in Contemporary America and The Poetry of Men's Lives: An International Anthology. The collection contains correspondence with prospective contributors and publishers, permissions information, research, publicity and reviews, and publishing agreements.

Biography

Fred Moramarco is the founding editor of Poetry International, an annual journal published at San Diego State University. Now retired, Moramarco taught creative writing, poetry, and American literature at San Diego State University. He is the co-author of several books, including Italian Pride: 101 Reasons to be Proud You're Italian, Containing Multitudes: Poetry in the US Since 1950, and Modern American Poetry.

Al Zolynas was born in Austria in 1945 and lived in a number of cities before settling in California. He teaches writing and literature at Alliant International University, San Diego, and resides with his wife in Escondido, California. He has written numerous books, including The New Physics, Under Ideal Conditions (San Diego Book Award, Best Poetry, 1994), and The Same Air.

Having known one another since graduate school, Moramarco and Zolynas collaborated on two anthologies of men's poetry, the first titled Men of Our Time: Male Poetry in Contemporary America and published in 1992. Their second editorial collaboration, The Poetry of Men's Lives: An International Anthology, published in 2004, won the San Diego Book Award for Best Poetry Anthology in 2005.

Scope and Contents of Collection

The Moramarco and Zolynas Editorial Files document the editorial and publication process behind two poetry anthologies conceived by Fred Moramarco and Al Zolynas. The collection contains correspondence, research notes, lists of accepted poems and permissions, clippings, and reader reports related to the publication of Men of Our Time: An Anthology Of Male Poetry in Contemporary America, 1992 and The Poetry Of Men's Lives: An International Anthology, 2004. The papers date from 1988 to 2005 and are arranged in two series: 1) CORRESPONDENCE and 2) EDITORIAL FILES.

SERIES 1: CORRESPONDENCE

The CORRESPONDENCE series is arranged alphabetically by correspondent and primarily contain responses from prospective poets regarding the inclusion of their poems in Men of Our Time. Notable correspondents include Robert Bly, Charles Bukowski, Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, William Stafford, and Nathaniel Tarn. Letters between editors Moramarco and Zolynas, filed under "Moramarco," document the development of their poetry anthologies, which sought to capture the contemporary male experience and the expressive quality of male poets.

SERIES 2: EDITORIAL FILES

The EDITORIAL FILES series is arranged by anthology and includes notes and research for each anthology, publicity, reviews, reader reports, and publishing agreements. A CD-R labeled " Poetry of Men's Lives Archives" is included in this series. The disc contains working files for the second anthology, including form letters, poems included in the anthology, permissions information, and drafts of the manuscript.
