Abstract

Administrative records of Keith A. Brueckner, professor of physics and administrator at the University of California, San Diego. Brueckner came to UCSD in 1959 and served as the founding chairman of the Department of Physics (1959-1961), Dean of the School of Science and Engineering (1963), Dean of Letters and Sciences (1963-1965), first Dean of Graduate Studies (1965), and director (1965-1970) of the Institute for Radiation Physics and Aerodynamics, later named the Institute for Pure and Applied Physical Sciences. The collection contains minutes and agenda from numerous early UCSD committees (1963-1968); grant proposals to furnish research and instructional facilities on Revelle and Muir College campuses; files related to the formation and development of academic departments; budget materials (1963-1967); academic planning materials, especially for undergraduate programs; facilities planning materials for buildings and space allocation; and, administrative subject files. Administrative History

In 1959, Roger Revelle appointed Keith Brueckner as a professor of physics for the new campus of the University of California, San Diego. As the founding chairman of the Physics Department, Brueckner played a key role in recruiting science faculty for the new School of Science and Engineering, originally planned as a graduate school.

In July 1961, Brueckner took a leave of absence to serve as vice president and director for the Institute for Defense Analyses in Washington, D.C. Upon his return in January 1963, he was appointed Dean of the School of Science and Engineering and spent much of the summer of 1963 recruiting faculty and establishing academic departments. In October 1963, his position title changed to Dean of Letters and Sciences in order to reflect the addition of humanities and social sciences departments.

In February 1965, Brueckner accepted the position of Dean of Graduate Studies, which he held for five months. Citing a desire to return to teaching and research, he became director of the new Institute for Radiation Physics and Aerodynamics (IRPA) which later combined with the Institute for the Study of Matter (ISM) to form the Institute for Pure and Applied Physical Sciences (IPAPS). Brueckner remained director of IPAPS until 1970.

Brueckner participated in campus development as a member of many committees. He served as chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee on Humanities and Social Sciences (1964), the Undergraduate Planning Committee (1964), the Planning Committee for the Second College (1964), the Space Committee (1963-1964), as well as an ex officio member of all Building Advisory Committees for First and Second Colleges. As a member of the Academic Senate, he served on the Campus Planning Committee (1963-1964), the Chancellor's Advisory Council (1963-1964), the Graduate Council (1964-1965), and the Research Committee (1964-1965). In addition, Brueckner participated at the University of California systemwide level as a member of the Council of Engineering Deans (1963-1965).

Scope and Content

The administrative records of Keith Brueckner provide significant documentation of the early growth and development of the University of California, San Diego. The records cover Brueckner's administrative activities in the positions of founding chairman of the Physics Department, Dean of the School of Science and Engineering, Dean of Letters and Sciences, Dean of Graduate Studies, and Director of the Institute for Radiation Physics and Aerodynamics.

SERIES 1: COMMITTEES

The COMMITTEES series, arranged alphabetically, contains files for campus administrative, academic senate and systemwide committees. The bulk of the materials dates from 1963 to 1965, the period of Brueckner's greatest involvement in campus administration.

SERIES 2: CONTRACTS AND GRANTS

The CONTRACTS AND GRANTS files, arranged alphabetically, document efforts to procure extramural funding for institutes and contain proposals to furnish newly constructed biology and chemistry laboratory buildings.

SERIES 3: CORRESPONDENCE

The CORRESPONDENCE series contains a small amount of scientific and general UCSD correspondence.

SERIES 4: DEPARTMENTS

The DEPARTMENTS series, arranged alphabetically, largely documents Brueckner's interactions with academic departments reporting to the Dean of Letters and Sciences. The materials, spanning the years 1962-1968 (bulk dates 1963-1965), often relate to the formation and development of individual departments. Well represented are the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, Applied Electrophysics and Physics Departments.

SERIES 5: BUDGET MATERIALS

The BUDGET MATERIALS contain general budgetary planning materials for the period 1963-1967.

SERIES 6: ACADEMIC PLANNING

The ACADEMIC PLANNING series, arranged alphabetically, documents Brueckner's involvement in academic planning at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Important documents relating to the development of the undergraduate program at UCSD can be found in the "Undergraduate Planning" folders. The files on the Council of Engineering Deans (systemwide) reflect Brueckner's participation in the formation of a UC master plan for engineering.

SERIES 7: FACILITIES PLANNING

Although many of the buildings on the campus of the School of Science and Engineering were nearing completion when Brueckner returned from Washington in 1963, considerable efforts were required to furnish and outfit laboratories and instructional facilities. In addition, planning for the Second College was well underway in 1964. This series documents planning for the furnishing of Revelle campus science laboratories and instructional spaces. Also included are planning documents related to Camp Matthews, Camp Elliott and a central library. The records cover the years 1962-1968 and are arranged alphabetically.

SERIES 8: SUBJECT FILES

The SUBJECT FILES cover administrative subjects such as enrollment, summer employment and year-round operation. The files date from 1962 to 1970 and arearranged alphabetically.

SERIES 9: ORIGINALS OF PRESERVATION PHOTOCOPIES

The ORIGINALS OF PRESERVATION PHOTOCOPIES series contains the originals of brittle or high acid content documents that have been photocopied.
