Abstract

Administrative records for the Department of Physical Education from 1975-1994. The collection includes correspondence of the department chair, departmental memoranda and minutes of department committee meetings, departmental policy statements, reports of accreditation reviews and of audits, and files pertaining to the department's curriculum and staff. Also included in the records are reports and memoranda pertaining to the reorganization of the department in 1987 and its subsequent disestablishment in 1994.

Administrative History

The Department of Physical Education was formed in the mid-1960s with the purpose of providing instruction to students wanting to obtain a lifetime appreciation for quality health and fitness. The department offered programs in four general areas: conditioning, aquatics, individual sports, and team sports. In addition, the department served the general university community by offering fitness assessment and guidance programs to faculty and staff. Members of the department coached intercollegiate teams or assisted in running the recreational programs for clubs and intramural athletics.

Prior to 1987, the department was comprised of three units--Instruction, Recreation, and Athletics--presided over by a faculty department chairperson. The department chair reported to both the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for matters concerning curricula and to the Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Affairs for matters concerning facilities. In 1987, the department was reorganized as the Dept. of Physical Education Instruction, reporting to the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs. The other two department units became the Dept. of Recreation and the Dept. of Athletics respectively and reported to the Vice Chancellor of Undergraduate Affairs.

In May 1994, the UCSD Academic Senate Committee on Academic Policy voted 12-1 to disestablish the Department of Physical Education. The reason for doing so was that the university's administration no longer had a clear understanding of the department's role in the university's mission and its distinctness from the roles of the Depts. of Recreation and Athletics.

Administrative records, comprising 6 linear feet, of the Physical Education Department from 1975 to its disestablishment in 1994. The collection is arranged in 12 series: 1. MANAGEMENT / ACCREDITATION REVIEWS AND AUDITS, 2. MEETINGS, 3. MISCELLANEOUS, 4. MEMORANDA, 5. POLICIES, 6. PROGRAMS, 7. DEPARTMENTAL ORGANIZATION, 8. SCHEDULING, 9. STAFF PERSONNEL, 10. WORKLOAD, 11. ACADEMIC PERSONNEL, and 12. BUDGET AND ACCOUNTING.

The first series, MANAGEMENT / ACCREDITATION REVIEWS AND AUDITS, is comprised largely of files pertaining to audits of the department's expenditures in the mid-1980s. The series also includes a report of a management review conducted in 1986.

The second series, MEETINGS, includes minutes of meetings of the department's faculty and meetings between various members of the department and other campus administrators.

The third series, MISCELLANEOUS, contains the general correspondence files of the department chair for 1988-1989 and files for various activities sponsored by the Physical Education Department.

Series four, MEMORANDA, is comprised of departmental announcements from 1984-1992.

Series five, POLICIES, includes departmental policy statements pertaining to evaluation of teaching, use of facilities, voting rights of emeriti faculty, emergency procedures, etc.

Series six, PROGRAMS, contains files documenting the facets of the department's curriculum. The series is subdivided in nine subseries: A. INTERNSHIPS, B. CONDITIONING, C. DANCE, D. FITNESS, E. FITNESS AND WELLNESS, F. PHYSICAL EDUCATION MINOR, G. SUMMER, H. DESCRIPTIONS / PHILOSOPHY, and I. REVIEWS.

The seventh series, DEPARTMENTAL REORGANIZATION, contains files concerning the department's reorganization in 1987.

The eighth series, SCHEDULING, includes files about scheduling of various programs and their expected enrollment. The series is divided into two subseries: A. GENERAL and B. ENROLLMENT.

Files pertaining to organization and responsibilites of the department's administrative staff are contained in the ninth series, STAFF PERSONNEL.

The tenth series, WORKLOAD, is made up of files documenting distribution of FTE by program area and projection of workloads for the years 1989-1992.

Series eleven, ACADEMIC PERSONNEL, includes files containing job descriptions, service expectations for faculty, teaching evaluations policies and results, FTE requests and allocations for 1975-1993, status of permanent faculty in comparison to other campus faculty, and searches for and appointments of temporary faculty for 1981-1993.

The last series, BUDGET AND ACCOUNTING, includes files documenting budget cuts experienced by the department in 1989-1993 and the use of departmental monies for various activities.
