LAUC-SD Graduate Internship Practicum

Overview

The University of California, San Diego Library seeks library and information science student interns to assist in various library programs. The intern may design a flexible schedule around classes. The position is unpaid but will generate library experience and enhance resumes.

Internship work may include: cataloging/metadata services, collection development, data curation, digital libraries, library instruction, reference and research assistance, special collections or user experience/usability testing and/or other specialties as needed. With the assistance of UC San Diego librarians and staff, the intern will work on a variety of projects as well as manage routine tasks that ensure the smooth operation of a large research library. Specific projects will be determined by the needs of the library and interests of the intern; internship outcomes will be developed accordingly. UC San Diego librarians will supervise and instruct the intern on proper procedures and library policy and will provide guidance on projects and tasks. In addition, the intern will learn about working in an academic library and will be introduced to current trends and issues research libraries.

The position is being extended to current graduate degree candidates in library science and library and information science schools. The Library will cooperate in arrangements for school credit wherever possible.

Qualifications:

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Basic knowledge of library practices and principles
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse community of librarians and staff.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Attention to detail and deadlines
  • Experience with Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Willingness to learn new software as required for specific projects
  • Ability to follow library procedures as necessary
  • Willingness to contribute professionally and creatively, through presentations or discussions, to the UC San Diego Library community
