LAUC-SD Graduate Internship Practicum

Overview

Currently, we are not accepting applications. We are in the process of evaluating our intern hosting program to ensure its sustainability and better cater to the requirements of graduate student interns. Please check back in the spring for policy updates.

Background

The UC San Diego Library strives to accommodate interns' schedules, allowing them to create a timetable that works with their classes. While this position is unpaid, it provides valuable library experience and can bolster resumes.

Internship opportunities could potentially be offered in any of the following departments:

  • Academic Engagement & Learning Services (Reference, Instruction, Liaison Services)
  • Collection Development & Management (development of collections that meet UC San Diego's specific research, programmatic, and instructional needs)
  • Content Acquisition & Resource Sharing (development and delivery of scholarship; planning and allocating space to collections; and development and application of appropriate preservation strategies for physical assets)
  • Metadata Services (Cataloging)
  • Research Data Curation Program (provides assistance with creating data management plans, training on data management best practices, guidance on depositing research data in the Library’s repository, and instruction on research computing skills)
  • Scholarship Tools and Methods (Scholarly Communication, Data & GIS)
  • Special Collections & Archives (curate and preserve rare, historic, or specialized materials, providing access and research support to scholars and the public)

With the assistance of UC San Diego librarians and staff, the intern may work on a variety of projects, as well as manage routine tasks that ensure the smooth operation of a large research library.

Specific projects will be determined by the needs of the library and interests of the intern, with internship outcomes developed accordingly. UC San Diego librarians will supervise and instruct the intern on proper procedures and library policy and will provide guidance on projects and tasks. Furthermore, the intern will gain insights into academic library operations and will be introduced to current trends and issues relevant to their specific internship.
