Winter Holiday Closure 2013

During the 2013 holiday season, UC San Diego (excluding the hospitals and clinics) will officially close for 11 days from Saturday, December 21, 2013 to Wednesday, January 1, 2014. This closure will result in significant energy savings from reduced operations.

Library Services during the Winter Holiday Closure

Building Hours

As part of the campus-wide Winter Holiday Closure, all UC San Diego Library facilities (the Geisel Library, the Biomedical Library Building, the Scripps Archives & Library Annex, and the Trade Street Storage Annex) will be closed from Saturday, December 21, 2013, through Wednesday, January 1, 2014.  Library facilities will reopen Thursday, January 2, 2014.

The Library’s Hours web pages have been updated to reflect hours for both before and after the holiday closure.

Online Resources

The following online resources will be available during the closure.  UC San Diego students, faculty and staff can access library-licensed resources through the campus proxy server or VPN.

Renewing Items (including ILL items)

  • No items will be due during the closure period.  
  • Use My ILL Requests or ill@ucsd.edu with the subject line “Renewal Request” to request ILL renewals. Note:  Renewal requests submitted after December 17, 2013 may not be responded to by lending institutions prior to December 21, 2013.  
  • Renewal requests received December 20, 2013 through January 1, 2014 will be processed beginning January 2, 2014.  

Returning Items (including ILL items)

  • No items will be due during the closure period.  
  • To return items between December 21, 2013 and January 1, 2014, there is a curbside return book drop on Hopkins Lane, west of the Geisel Library building, additionally there are two book drops located at its entrance.  
  • The Biomedical Library Building book drop will be CLOSED.

Research Assistance

During the closure, limited online research assistance will be available through the Library’s 24/7 online chat serviceNote:  During this time questions will be answered by librarians from non-UC academic libraries.  Questions referred to UC San Diego librarians will be answered starting January 2, 2014 and will be answered in the order in which they were received.  Students, faculty and staff who send questions by email or leave telephone messages during the closure period will start receiving replies on January 2, 2014.

Course Reserves

  • Use the online form to submit requests.  Requests are processed in the order received.  Note:  Requests submitted after December 20, 2013 may not be available for student use until after Winter quarter instruction has begun.
  • Winter quarter electronic reserves materials that have been processed will become available via the Course Reserves Website beginning January 2, 2014.

Interlibrary Loan Requests

  • Interlibrary Loan requests submitted December 21, 2013 through January 1, 2014 will be processed in the order received beginning January 2, 2014.

Roger and Circuit Requests

  • Roger and Circuit requests submitted December 20, 2013 through January 1, 2014 will be processed in the order received beginning January 2, 2014.
