Medical Center Library to Close April 1

UPDATE: we now have a page on our website with details for Medical Center users about how to get access to collections and services following the closure of MCL.

——————————-

From Melissa Just, Director of the Biomedical Library:

———-

Due to the current budget situation, the UCSD Libraries have had to make the difficult decision to close some library facilities. One of the affected facilities is the Medical Center Library (MCL), which will close on April 1st, 2011.  The administration of the Libraries regrets that we are having to resort to these measures.

On April 1st we will close the Medical Center Library facility and do the following:

  • Reassign MCL staff to positions in the Geisel or Biomedical Library
  • Cease clinical support services, including the services of the nursing librarian
  • Stop physical delivery of library items from UCSD to Hillcrest

In the weeks immediately following the closing, we will:

  • Review online clinical resources for renewal or cessation
  • Evaluate the physical collection and identify items to retain and relocate to other UCSD Libraries
  • Relocate computer workstations and other equipment to other UCSD Libraries

If you have questions about MCL’s closing, please feel free to contact me. Additional information about the overall Libraries budget situation can be found on the UCSD Libraries Budget News site at http://libraries.ucsd.edu/budgetcutsFAQ/intro.html.  The press release about the closure is here: http://libraries.ucsd.edu/about/press/releases/2011/mcl-to-close.html

If you have concerns about the closing of MCL and its possible impacts and would like to share them with the Libraries, University, and/or Health Sciences administration, you may send them to:

Brian E. C. Schottlaender, The Audrey Geisel University Librarian: becs@ucsd.edu

David Brenner, Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences & Dean of the School of Medicine: dbrenner@ucsd.edu

Suresh Subramani, Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs: svcaa@ucsd.edu

Marye Anne Fox, Chancellor: chancellor@ucsd.edu

Sincerely,

Melissa L. Just, MLIS, EdD, AHIP

We’ve updated our e-journals browsing tool on our Website.  We now have one master e-journal listing with better search capabilities and far fewer duplicate entries.  The data is coming from the same source as the UC eLinks tool that you see when you use our databases to find full text articles.

UCSD Libraries Budget News

As most of you know, the Governor of California has recently proposed a $500 million cut to the University of California’s budget for the 2011-2012 Fiscal Year. To prepare for an anticipated $60 million cut, the campus has asked the Libraries to prepare for a $3 million budget cut, on top of the nearly $5 million in cuts the Libraries have absorbed to date.

The attached document describes the budget reductions suffered by the Libraries since 2008/09 and outlines the actions the Libraries will need to take to absorb an additional $3 million cut in 2011/12. This document has been shared with all campus Deans, Academic Affairs’ Department Chairs, the College Provosts, the Academic Senate leadership, the presidents of the Associated and the Graduate Student Association, and the Libraries staff in order to pave the way for the serious discussions we will need to have in order to downsize and rethink what we do and how we do it. The budget cut scenario outlined for 2011/12 includes further cuts to the collections budget and reducing the number of library buildings we staff and support from six to two.

I welcome your input on how we implement these changes over the next year, in order to focus on what will best serve our university community with significantly reduced resources.

Sincerely,

Brian E. C. Schottlaender
The Audrey Geisel University Librarian

30 Million Interlibrary Loans…

When you request items via Interlibrary Loan, if they cannot be found within the libraries of the UC system they often get sent to an international network of health sciences libraries through a service called DOCLINE.  Managed by the National Library of Medicine, DOCLINE lets libraries share their less-commonly-held journals.   Yesterday DOCLINE handled its 30 millionth transaction – it was a request from Saint Louis University to the University of Nevada.  Quiet and largely unknown to end-users, it truly is a model of reciprocity which leverages the resources of libraries nationwide.  And you just thought you were getting an article!
