Patient Safety In San Diego Hospitals

Joseph Scherger M.D., UCSD School of Medicine and director of Quality Improvement in Correctional Medicine, explores patient safety issues in San Diego area hospitals in today’s San Diego Union-Tribune. (November 10, 2005)

Listing the guidelines from the “To err is human”, a 1999 Institute of Medicine report on medical mistakes and 2004 campaign to “Save 100,000 lives” by June 2006 from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Scherger reviews changes that are underway in local hospitals. He also reminds us as patients we need to protect ourselves by asking more questions, keeping a written list of medications, and making sure we understand information presented.
