Borrowing

Current UC San Diego faculty, staff, and students may borrow materials from the UC San Diego Library and libraries worldwide. Your UC San Diego ID card is your library card. Other patrons are eligible for borrowing privileges upon registration. See Library Cards & Checkout Periods for details.

 

Request & Hold Books

Users can request UC San Diego Library items listed as “Available” in UC Library Searchto be retrieved and made available through your preferred pick-up locationMaterials will be held for you for up to 7 days. Items held at the Annex from Special Collections & Archives will be made available for use in Geisel Library’s Special Collections & Archives unit during its hours.

  • Materials from the Annex - Requests will arrive within 2 to 3 business days.
  • Materials from Geisel & WongAvery - You’ll receive a notice within 3 to 5 business days when the item is available for pick-up.

Submit Your Request

  • For UC San Diego affiliates, locate the desired items in UC Library Search and log-in to request.
  • For non-cardholders, use the Request Form to request items from the Annex. Leave the barcode field blank.

Scan Articles and Book Chapters (digital delivery)

UC San Diego faculty, staff, students and all library cardholders can request scanned chapters of items from most of the Library’s print collection free of charge using one of the following options.  Requests will be delivered electronically to the email address provided within 3 to 5 business days of submission. Members of the general public are not eligible for scanning of locally-owned materials unless they are held at the Annex, as noted below.

Members of the general public can have articles and book chapters from materials stored in the Annex scanned and digitally delivered free of charge without a Library Card. Submit Scanning Request Form after consulting UC Library Search.

Borrow from Other Libraries

UC San Diego students, faculty, and staff may request books, articles, and other items that are not available at UC San Diego. Items obtained on loan usually arrive within 7 business days.  Articles are delivered electronically within 3 business days. See the Interlibrary Loan service for more information. 

UC San Diego Library affiliates also have access to the wide variety of books beyond our campus through the San Diego Circuit ConsortiumTo access Circuit, users should log into UC Library Search. Once an item has been searched, users can select the “Search in Circuit” option in the Request area.

Return

Return materials at book return bins. Bins are outside the north and south entrance of WongAvery Library. Additionally, drive-up return bins are located on North Point Lane near the North Point Visitor Information Center.

Tech Lending Return

Items from Tech Lending must be returned to the Service Hub from which the material was borrowed. During Geisel Overnight Study hours, Tech Lending items may be returned to the available bin in the Service Hub.

Renew

Renew UC San Diego Materials

  1. Go to UC Library Search.
  2. Log in to your My Library Account.
  3. Check the box next to the item(s) you want to renew, and select Renew Checked Items.

You can also renew items at the Service Hub of Geisel Library or WongAvery Library, or by phone at 858-534-0134. Items with recalls or holds, or in fine status, cannot be renewed.

Renew Interlibrary Loan Materials 

Request renewal of your Interlibrary Loan materials by logging into My ILL Request or by contacting ILL.

  1. Click My ILL Requests (some instructions below).
  2. Log in with the barcode on the back of your UC San Diego ID card.
  3. Renew the item(s).

Submit renewal requests up to one week before the due date. Requests submitted after the item's due date may result in late fees. Allow 4 to 5 business days for a final response.

Visit the Annex for On-Site Viewing

UC San Diego faculty, staff, and students needing to view large runs of journals or other items may visit the Annex (located in the Miramar area off Trade Street) in person between 8am and 2pm Monday through Friday by making an appointment in advance. Email desired date, arrival time, and a list of materials needed to AnnexRequests@ucsd.edu or call (858) 653-6641. Materials are retrieved in advance and available in the reading room when you arrive. For safety reasons, browsing Annex shelves is not permitted.

Search for Missing Items

If you can't find an item on the shelf and it is listed as “Available” in UC Library Search, report it missing by contacting the Service Hub of Geisel Library or WongAvery Library. Library staff will verify the item’s status and shelving location, and initiate a search if the item cannot be located.

Check UC San Diego Email for Library Notices

The UC San Diego Library sends all notices by email. Library notices for UC San Diego faculty, staff, and students are sent to your official UC San Diego email address.

The Library is not responsible for notices that are not received. Failure to respond to notices can result in suspension of Library borrowing privileges and the assessment of Library fines and/or fees. If you do not receive Library notices, contact the Service Hub of Geisel Library or WongAvery Library.
