A selection of scanned images relating to the papers of Henry William Menard (1920-1986), a marine geologist who was known for his research in plate tectonics and seafloor spreading. Menard was professor of geology at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, acting director of the UC Institute of Marine Resources (1967-1969), and tenth director of the U.S. Geological Survey (1978-1981). The collection includes scans of images he used in his books, particularly Anatomy of an Expedition (1969), with a focus on the 1967 Nova Expedition. It also includes sea floor images from the 1957-1958 Downwind Expedition, and pictures of some of his oceanography colleagues. Some images may be available digitally only.
