John Muir College was the second college to be founded at UC San Diego and admitted its first students in 1967. Named after John Muir (1983-1914) environmentalist, writer, and founder of the Sierra Club; the college emphasizes individual choice and responsibility, as well as encourages awareness of environmental issues, preservation, and sustainability. The Provosts at UC San Diego serve as the academic and administrative leader of their college and are responsible for overseeing curriculum, faculty, programs and activities related to college life, acting as the college’s representative, and serving on several campus-wide committees. - Creation Date
